My wife wants a weekend getaway before our upcoming child is born and we've been thinking about staying at a bed and breakfast in Atchison for the night (the Inn on Oak Street). I've never actually stayed at a bed and breakfast before so what would I expect?

Also, are there any good places in Atchison just to get a good view of the river?

I don't live in Atchison, but I am familiar with the area. There is a great view of the river up on the bluff on the south side of the highway. Also, drive up to the campus to the north and there are some pretty good views of the river from there as well. Check out the train museum. On your way up, you might want to drive through Weston, Mo. There is a park called Weston Bend. Can drive to an overlook in the park. Very interesting area. Might want to stop for lunch in Weston. The history of this part of the KS and MO is very interesting. Read up on the Lewis and Clark expedition through this area. The Kanza Indians had a major settlement along Independence Creek. You can drive up north of Atchison and check out a Kanza earth home.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I have fond childhood memories of making the yearly pilgrimage to the orchard they used to have in Weston and I'm sure my wife would love the area there. I'll also look into the earth home you mentioned.

Interesting about the orchard near Weston. There used to be a lot of apple orchards in northeastern KS. The Kanza Indians dated back to 1673 in the Atchison area. A French explorer documented an encounter in about 1724. There was also a fairly large Kanza village in Manhattan, KS as well. There are no markers of the presence of the Kanzas in Manhattan. It is a very nice spot along Wildcat Creek. Very well protected. Lewis and Clark passed through the Atchison area in 1804. I believe Buffalo Bill lived in Weston for a period of time. He was from Leavenworth. Have a great trip.
