With all the attention fires are getting out West, I was somewhat surprised to read about USFS hiring in the plains. The need was likely raised from last year's OK => KS wildfires. I would not be surprised that hiring was going on in other parts of the country. IF a young person were interested in a job with any Federal agency with land mgmt responsibilities, this is a great opportunity (not all jobs are firefighters) to get a "Red Card," which gives an applicant a leg up over someone without.

Forest Service hiring hundreds of seasonal firefighters in Nebraska and neighboring states

The photograph in the article was taken to the north of my neighborhood. Prairie fires are intentionally set every spring in the Flint Hills of KS. The fires which spread from OK to KS burned grasslands which typically are not burned at all. Red cedar invades prairie when it is not routinely burned; and rapidly grows to become an incendiary device. One house in our neighborhood has a deck w/hot tub, from which you can reach out & touch a house-high red cedar!

No affiliation with USFS.
