Sometimes it can be fun to just stumble across a previously unknown beach.
Mahalo!
Many years ago, in 1986 I was on my honeymoon and we spent a few days on Kauai. We had no idea of where we were going to, but stopped on the road by a very small bridge that just had a very small pull-off area, just big enough for 1 or 2 cars at the most. We walked through some trees and came upon a beach where all there was around were some chickens. We spent the whole day there laying on the beach and swimming in the ocean. I do remember to the left was an area where there was a sign that said it was a dangerous undertow area. We stayed away from that. We found a coconut on the beach and got all the husk off and cracked it open and ate it. It was a wonderful day. I am sure that little beach probably now has a hotel on it. One thing I always wondered...I grew up in S. California and was in the ocean there many many times. The water in Hawaii was so much saltier than in CA, why is that?

I'd say it was just your perception, somehow. The concentration of salt in seawater is actually lower closer to the equator then it is toward the poles.

+1 to what KauaiPono said. My wife and I were in Kauai last June and kayaked by the boats in Hanalei Bay; it was magical. Moloaa Bay a very close second; much quieter than a lot of the more touristy beaches but still gorgeous.
