Honestly, there are some wonderful, accepting areas of Kentucky. But with rare exception, being a free thinker in rural Kentucky isn't one of them, imo.
Even Kentuckians will admit that rural and small town Kentucky are not the right places for free thinkers.

In all fairness, I've always admitted a slight bias against the rural areas of Kentucky, even being a Kentuckian. It's truly based on my personal experiences over decades with almost every part of Kentucky. In large part it's based on disappointment, not anger.

Now, I'm more than happy to say there are many wonderful exceptions, even in the narrowest of towns. So I'm talking in generalities, which is always risky. But in general, free thinkers of any kind don't fit in well in rural Kentucky.

Apparently there are a lot of Amish in Munfordville KY (about a half hour north of Glasgow). That is a bit more than 1 hour west of Liberty and maybe a bit less than that from Columbia.

The Amish of Munfordville, Kentucky

I don't know the area but I read your post and poked around a bit and thought this article might interest you.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. We are convinced that Liberty (Casey County) is where we want to be. Thank you again!

As a free-thinking, gay-friendly, Ron Paul supporting, mother to non-caucasian kids, libertarian, C4Ler, born in Winchester, now living in Lexington, I say come on down. There are squads of us everywhere, lol. We may not all be sporting Ron Paul or RINO hunter caps, but we are here and our numbers are growing.

Check out takebackkentucky.com and if you friend me on Facebook (Sally O'Boyle), you'll find lots of other groups of like-minded individuals. I'm headed to my monthly C4L meeting tonight, as a matter of fact.

There are liberty folks of all kinds here: from the Glenn Beck/Israel supporting GOPers to the Ron Paul rEVOLutionaries. Something for everyone. All the groups are working together on common issues and we've agreed to disagree on others. We absolutely see the need to unite behind common goals.

My family (husband, two gigantic teens and I) recently moved back to the area after almost 40 years away. My siblings and mom live here, always have; it is a great place to settle. I didn't think it would be, wondered how my kids would be accepted (we had race riots in my high school in the early 70s, blacks and Jews were not allowed at my country club then). I wondered if there would be a good liberty movement here. I am happy to report all good. My liberty friends are well-read, with it, ACTIVE, smart and funny and I'm in liberty heaven.

Best of luck with your move. KY is a good place to be for us.

Default Moving to Kentucky

Good luck-with your move. I'm also moving to Liberty, Kentucky-but not right away-I met some people in Lexington that seemed pretty progressive-they said the mayor is openly gay.

I expect most people in Liberty will be open-minded if you contribute positively to their community. My daughter is a college student and she has purple-hair, but otherwise she's a nice kid, gets good grades and doesn't do drugs.

Just like anywhere, if people get to know you-you can make friends and if you are open to their lifestyle too. Personally, I am looking forward to the Ag fairs, world's longest garage sale and Apple Fest-those are things that anyone can enjoy regardless of politics right?

Kaelah,

While searching for property (southern KY/ northern TN) in 1980 I / we looked at properties in Casey Co. (Liberty), Pulaski Co. (Somerset), Russell Co. (Russell Springs - Jamestown), Metcalfe, Clinton, Adair, and Wayne Co. all in KY plus other places in TN.

Granted it was 1980 NOT 2012, but I am SO glad the owners of the property we made an offer on, ACCEPTED it! It is in Adair Co. about 6 miles SE of Columbia.

Considering I - we have lived in Adair Co. (county seat Columbia) since 1981 I am perplexed as to the source of
Quote:
... mostly because of the negative opinions I have read on here and on local town forums pertaining to local government corruption, police abuse of power, possible racism, etc.
I know of NO county in KY(probably true of EVERY county in EVERY state) where every government official - office - politician is squeaky clean, HONEST, and not (by my definition, 'corrupt')! Police "abuse of power"? Until I was disabled during a police pursuit accident, I was one of them. Trust me, if I 'KNEW' or even heard and trusted a rumor of police abuse of power, I'd speak up! I am NOT in 'law enforcement', I am NOT 'friends' with those who are, but I know (nor have I 'heard') of any behavior - attitude - etc. that is unique to this county - city! And, as for "racism", while I was in VISTA I lived (worked) in Hough (Cleveland, OH) DURING the Hough 'riots'. I am NOT stating racial tolerance is the 'norm' in this county, but at the risk of being 'defensive' I can - will bluntly say, Casey County is, if not MORE so, as racist (or not racist) as Adair, Russell, Metcalfe, Green, and Taylor Co.!

I am a bit confused though because I 'think' you want privacy - ability to BE who you want to be, DO what you want to do, and generally not be 'bothered'? Yet, you mention the city-town of Columbia as if you are considering moving to the town while comparing it to-with Casey Co.? I / we have GOOD friends (even OLDER than either of us, LOL) who've lived in Casey Co. at least as long as I've lived here! The things they've 'shared' about their county make me wonder about the objectivity - credibility of your sources of info.

NO area is perfect. I'd not credit the Adair Co. school system with being the most advanced in the state, but with friends with families living in ALL neighboring counties, I don't know of a single one that I'd opt to live in if I had school age children. I / we have some AMAZING friends who live (or lived) in this county and others who live in Russell Co. For every negative I have with/about/for Adair Co. I promise I can come up with different, but an EQUAL number for every county around here.

As arbitrary and as ridiculous as it may sound-BE, I'd compare property values for each county you are considering. Then I'd rank my choices with choice #1 being the county with the highest per acre property value! True, real estate investors may, to a degree, influence property values, but I believe there is a viable correlation between property value - quality of the educational system, tax base, governmental integrity, quality of law enforcement (municipal [if applicable], county = sheriff, and State Police., industrial / employment options, etc. etc. etc.

I've tried to be as OBJECTIVE and as analytical as possible/practical, but now I'm going to do-take a 'dig' at Casey Co. Casey Co. has the community / area named Raywick. It is the 'pot' capital (or was), the best known area for law enforcement AVOIDS being anywhere near it, and 'rumor' has it that if you want to dispose of stolen property from personal items to cars, trucks, etc. there's a place in/near Raywick that is perfect! Now, how 'true' the preceding is, I do NOT honestly 'know'. But, that is what I've heard from many, including 'locals' who I trust to 'KNOW' and who don't color / make the fish BIGGER than it truly was!

GOOD luck with your research, your decision, AND your move! In closing, TRUST ME, the very fact that I have lived in this (Adair Co. and shopped - done business in Columbia) for 30+ years is significant, given who I am / who we are, AND what I/we do! Odds are, I/we could have lived in Casey Co. for all these years and said the SAME thing, so please understand, I am NOT picking on Casey Co. NOR am I defending - enhancing Adair Co.!

A true tale - post note. Maybe 15? years ago (LONG before caller ID etc.) our phone rang. I answered it. The caller identified himself as the Sheriff (who I had met / casually 'knew' from jury duty etc.). He asked me to look out the front window, if I would, and see if I could tell if the 'neighbor' across the highway was home. He explained they had a warrant to serve, but he did NOT want to go out / send a deputy ALL this way, 6 miles, if no one was home! Now that is RESOURCEFUL 'law enforcement' BTW, he did NOT 'know' I'd been a police officer.

Be WELL 'n be SAFE!

Default Casey County, KY

I realized later that I shouldn't speak for a place if I'm not from there.

I'm really looking forward to moving out there. I visited last year and found it to be a lovely area.

I'm big on nature, peace and quiet and the proximity to farms is also something I'm looking for, you see these things are not so easy to come by here where I'm from.

I was born in Louisville Kentucky, have traveled all over the United States as a bartender, get along with most people as long as they respect me I respect them. I am educated and back in school, I have family in Columbia, Ky and am thinking of moving to Columbia to be near family, presently I live in Southern CA in Orange County. CA people are certainly differently, but I am weary of big cities. Would like to come to Columbia and perhaps work as a bartender if the county is not dry or in the hospital as I have worked in that field in many areas.

"Slingardring" Unfortunately, Adair Co (Columbia) and the surrounding counties are "dry", except Campebellsville; just north of Columbia. If you aren't from or have a family from the Adair Co, you will be isolated from the community. Not saying that the people are friendly, they don't "open-up" to strangers. The biggest meeting place is the local McDonalds. Seems like everyone in the town is there. Overall, if you are use to a "fast-pace" environment, Columbia won't be your cup of tea. The Super Walmart doesn't have a auto section for oil and tire changes. There is only one place in Columbia that it. When I had my oil changed there, it took almost 3-hours to get it done; and that was when there were no customers waiting to get gasoline put into this vehicle... haha As for family entertainment (movies, bowling, etc)... none. Campebellsville (30 miles away) has those. Seems like the entire town has a bubble around it; everything stays the same inside, and no outside influences come in...
