This is an interesting site - I have enjoyed reading the posts. I do have a question...I have always thought of Kentucky as some of the above posts (hickville, trailer trash, inbreds, etc). So...comparing Utah to Kentucky is there anybody out there that has any type of comparison? Thanks so much!

Utah and Kentucky? Yeah, we wooped your ass a number of years back in the NCAA Tournament. If you want real hoops, head to Kentucky. Rick Majerus loves the state, by the way.

The wealthiest county in KY is now Oldham according to the updated Census statistics. Median household income is 86K. The suburbs of Cincinnati on the KY side and parts of the Louisville area are holding up somewhat well through this Great Recession. The rural areas of the state have severe issues with jobs, however.

Well, they are both states in the Union, Utah has the Mormons, Kentucky has the race horses, I suspect Kentucky got first choice.

Utah vs Kentucky
Thanks, I wasn't really talking in regards to sports. I was referring about lifestyle, job market, opportunities, housing, education system...thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify. I have heard KY is absolutely beautiful, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, etc. It sounds like an amazing place to visit, but what is a true KY lifestyle and how does it differ from Utah?

Seemingly like one of the few people that have been to both, I have been to Utah many times but only for a week at a time; both in the summer and winter months. In Kentucky, everything in the summer is much 'greener' than in Utah. The pollen and rainfall is significantly higher but the winds and the sunny days aren't as frequent. In Utah, you always have mountains in the distance to help guide drivers who are directionally challenged. There is a lot less snowfall in Kentucky with most years under a foot. On averages, you'd be moving to one of the most outdoor active, 'healthiest' states to one that is not so much.
In the urban areas, the differences won't seem as large as when you travel in the country. In Utah, you can move the speedo up to 75mph with the open, flat portions but not in Kentucky. There aren't the 20-mile, flat roads where you can see miles and miles ahead. Cincinnati has a lot of buildings that are also built into the hills but you won't have mountains in the background. On traffic, there are more 'local drivers' in Utah. Since everything is much closer (city to city) in Kentucky and in the East in general, more people on the roadways are simply passing through vs. being local drivers. This adds to the traffic congestion compared to Utah. For visiting, there are many direct flights from Cin. to Salt Lake.

Yes so, backwards that all the construction cranes are in the city of Cincinnati, the Streetcar just got approved, Cincinnati is building its new tallest, and the billion dollar Banks Project is under construction, as is the new Cincinnati Riverfront Park. If it weren't for Cincinnati, Covington and Newport wouldn't be half of what they are today. They owe a lot of their success to Cincinnati. I don't really find Newport's Rivefront that attractive.
Cincinnati's new CASINO was voted one the best new urban casino designs. I don't know if you have seen the renderings yet or not. I enjoy going down to Fountain Square's new restaurants, watching all the people out and about, going to the night clubs in Mount Adams, and taking in the views of Cincinnati's changing skyline. The rapidly changing Over The Rhine district with architecture you only find in a few select cities across the country.
Cincinnati is not backwards; they are moving in an ever progressive urban mindset. New public transit (Streetcar), greatly changing city neighborhoods, and extremely diverse economy (Macy's, Kroger, Procter and Gamble, Fifth Third, Great American Insurance, GE Aviation, etc). Cincinnati is a true gem, and it is being seen everday.

Northern Kentucky is so reasonable with new homes very affordable and real estate taxes so low. I was looking a couple of years ago but its hard to just move to a new place, buy a home and then find a job there. That seems to be the order, as how can you find a job unless you are there. The internet is fine but if you have a local address I think it helps. I feel good when I cross the Roebling Bridge and see some Battle Flags. While Kentucky was a border state, even northern Kentucky feels like the south to me.
