So...how big is basketball in Kentucky? I heard it was popular. I also posted something similar in Louisville, but thought I'd open it up to the entire state as well.
Is it THE most popular sport...is it REGIONAL...more popular in certain areas of Kentucky, maybe Lexington? Maybe Louisville (with some nearby Indiana Hoosier influence)?
Indiana seems to be a basketball epicenter as well...is Louisville a part of that entire epicenter...does the Hoosier State get a bit of their desire from Louisville perhaps? Or vice-versa? Is it as popular the more eastern you get in Kentucky?
Is there another sport more popular...or is Basketball pretty much it? Are hoops set up outside fairly commonplace in driveways?
Also, would someone say it might even be more popular then horse races, etc.? Or is that just not said...?
Additionally, are basketball games something you'd see played in most sports bars throughout Kentucky, or at least certain areas of Kentucky?
Lastly, am I wrong about basketball and Kentucky have a strong connection. I read it somewhere, so just trying to get an idea of the extent of it

You are right on target with all of the above. Kentucky is a basketball state definitely...all of Kentucky, not just Lexington and Louisville. Not everyone bleeds blue though, but most do. There are also Uof L fans.
Football is fairly popular also, but basketball is THE sport in Kentucky. Also, there are a lot more basketball fans than horse racing fans. It is more widespread and accessible to everyone.
The primary function for the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville is to provide thrilling sports action and to have championship caliber basketball and football teams.
Basketball is very big in KY. UK is the most followed, UL second. However, WKU has had a solid program through the years as well. Surprisingly WKU is 14th on the list of all time wins in DI, actually higher than UL. KY Wesleyan has been a powerhouse in DII forever. NKU has had a solid DII program in recent years as well. In other words, college basketball is big in KY, even beyond UK and UL.
It's not just popular, it's a pathetic disgusting obsession. Almost everyone here in Lexington dresses up in blue from head to toe during game days. They know more about The Cats than they know about who they voted for, God or how to operate an automobile. Nobody really has much to say in this town, other than "Go Cats" "Y'all seen that move so-and-so did last minute?" "Calipari really done come through for The Cats!" It makes me sick... I long for real conversation.
When U of K football team gets ranked at or near the top in the national polls, football will come close to basketball in being equal.
I don't see that happening in the near future.
