the Kingsport mall aka Towne Center/Ft Henry is in much better shape than the Bristol Mall. It has bigger name stores and has a new theater that is building an Imax. The only reason the Belk Home Store merges was for the new long planned food court and theater

Yeah snf the imax was suppose to start building in November. Dont get me wrong I hope it happens food court and all because I think it will help the mall with new stores and better facilities. The Bristol mall will not make it past next yesr because they are losing Belk to The Pinnacle at exit 74. I didnt realize this but Belk actually has 3 or 4 stores at the Bristol mall so that will hurt them tremendously.

There's a school at the Knoxville Center Mall (former East Town Mall). It seems like a good idea for struggling malls to diversify and become mixed use.

The thing I wonder with the food court is where will it go. There isn't enough room next to the old Chick-Fil-A for a full size food court. You could possibly put in a few more restaurants if the Garfield's site was emptied out. I honestly don't see Kingsport having the retail market for all this and I don't see Kingsport as being a destination for an IMAX.

If this happens like its supposed to the upstairs where all those stores were moved out from above garfields is where the food court was going to eventually go. I honestly dont see all that happening but if the IMAX takes off like it is supposed to i see some renovations to keep the mall viable. I think this was in the agreement with Frank Theaters if they located there they would do the upgrades as well.

I worked at Fort Henry mall back in 98 and 99. It was goimg down hill bad back then. Rent at Mr Bulkys (candy store on corner upstairs at escelator) was 1200.00 a month which we had trouble meeting (I was not an owner but I did write out bills). There were times the owners paid us from their own bank account. We had sloooow sales during the week and made the majority of money on the weekends. Carlton Cards wasnt much better. Corporate was always complaining about our sales during the week. We rarely made budget except for the weekends. Corporate constantly tried new sales tactics....new store layout....new products more visits from the district manager. It was a sinking ship back then. Didnt matter what they did......there was no traffic during the week. So then the employees were forced to try for more add on sales and high pressure techniques. It was not good. Back then JC mall was taking all the business they said. Christmas and Valentines day were the salvation of many stores. There was talk of a food court back then and it still hasnt happened. Needless to say....I am not holding my breath.

When I was growing up, everyone shopped downtown. The Bristol Mall was built when I was 16, and everyone went there and downtown flopped. Next Exit 7 in Bristol, Virginia developed and no one goes to the mall anymore. Next will be Exit 5 development and no one will go to Exit 7 anymore. I think it is wasteful and stupid.

IMO, this was the nicest looking Penney's store in our area after the extensive renovations in the Bristol mall several years back. With Penney's gone and Belk gone to the new development, this leaves Sears, a dying chain, as the sole anchor in the mall. The mall will then soon close.

It's really sad as I've had good memories in this mall as a kid. Times change and businesses come and go, but it's sad to watch our area collapse as it is.
