This article came out last fall so I assume the expansion is well underway. Amazing to think they've added over 12,000 members since May '13.

The Greater Kingsport Family YMCA is "building for the future" with a multimillion-dollar expansion of its facility, doubling the size of its gymnasium, expanding the space for children and teens and possibly adding an indoor walking track, teaching kitchen and a cafe.

YMCA officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion Wednesday afternoon along with thanking the Blue Cross Health Foundation for a $1.6 million grant.

The Greater Kingsport Family YMCA cut the ribbon on its $3 million expansion Friday afternoon, officially opening up its new child watch areas, teen lounge, full-size gym and expanded wellness room.

“This is a fantastic day for the Y,” YMCA Board Chair David Woodmansee said to the gathered crowd of elected officials, community leaders, donors and Y members and staff at Friday’s event. “It’s a true pleasure to have a facility with this kind of capability.”

Less than two years after opening its new facility and due to a significant growth in membership, the YMCA chose to move forward on a major expansion of its campus earlier this year to meet the demands of its 18,000-plus members.

The Y was way overdue in Kingsport. Kingsport had virtually nothing in the way of quality gyms (Gold Star is bad and GBC has become rundown over the years). I agree the facility was just way too small for the crowds it ended up drawing. My dad is a member (technically, I am too, as it's a family membership) and has sent me pictures of the development. I'll be excited to check it out Saturday when I'm home.

That's good news. I had a membership for a while, but cancelled it because the place was always so crowded.
