I grew up in Church Hill, and spent my childhood and teenage years going to "town" to Kingsport. My latest observations are these:

Downtown Kingsport seemed like it started a nice little growth spurt, but then it stalled somewhat. What's with the slowdown--overall economy?
Kport has an amazing stock of industrial/older buildings in and around downtown. Wow, the lofts/live/work areas that could go in there!
Also, the area on Sullivan Street where the new IPA grocery store is has all those vacant lots, which I'm wondering what is being built there, if anything? Does anyone know? It looks rough.
I'm just appalled at the continued construction of NEW shopping centers in and around the city, with all the older, vacant ones still around. Aren't there like 4 or 5 pretty much vacated shopping center sites in the city?
On a positive note, the greenbelt was gorgeous, and a terrific place to walk or jog. We did each day and it was so enjoyable.

There have been 84 downtown lofts built in downtown in the past 3 years that are live/work/play orientated. They are 99% occupied last I heard so they may be 100% by now.
The slowdown is due to the economy slow down.
I'm not sure either what is going on there around IGA on Sullivan St. I hope it gets cleaned up too. I think it is going to take new blood buying the houses around there and fixing them up in mass.
