Well, I figure since this forum covers most any subject, I wouldn't feel odd adding this one. I went to school for my medical transcription diploma, and that was 2 years ago. For 2 years I have been looking to find a job in this area, and it is just flat out impossible! I have networked, looked on blog sites, job sites, MT sites, and nothing! Everyone wants 2+ years experience. Does anyone have any leads to where I can maybe even volunteer to gain the experience needed? Anything would be helpful. I hate to think that I wasted all that loan money that I'm having to repay back, for nothing.

Thank you SO much!!

I feel for you. I have done this for 9 years and still do not have what I want. Medical transcription has been an exciting field where one can learn a great deal. The work, however, has gone out to overseas and the wages set in the USA are dropping to below minimum wage, and still web sites advertise that one can make 6 figure incomes doing this work. Time for a wakeup call.

It's not just this field. There are a lot of myths about income potential being spread by educational institutions, ESPECIALLY private ones!!

I've been wondering about medical billing. We got the info about the course - but don't know if there's potential employment afterwards (esp. from home). Have you looked at this site - AHIMA Home - American Health Information Management Association

I know someone who does it from home, but they have their own biz.
Not like they work for someone feeding them patients a few at a time.
They have clients that are different practices in the area and make really good money.
Both husband and wife work on it.

Problem is starting your own business (getting your license, setting up your software, hardware and backup) and of course finding clients when you don't have any experience.

I just want to point out that getting your business license in the Knoxville area is very easy. My husband has a business and you go downtown and get a city and county license and a federal tax number. There is not a lot of red tape in this state and the fees are also very low. I think the entire process cost somewhere around $48. That was for a bricks and mortar building where service and parts would be sold.

Hi LovinLife!

I know exactly how you feel. I have my legal secretary certificate but when I moved here from Ohio, no one was interested in hiring someone from 'out of state'. I was fortunate enough to find a job, though it wasn't in the legal field, for a great company in Knoxville. I just kept looking and looking.
Oddly enough, the week I was offered the job I am at now, I was offered a legal assistant position with a firm in Sevierville...who wanted to pay me $2 an hour less than what I was offered at the other non-law office place. Of course, I said no way and I'm happier nonetheless!

I realize it is difficult right now to find work; have you considered contacting temp agencies to hold you over until you find something permanant? Maybe check the websites of all the hospitals, to see what they offer? Of even contact the local medical society to see what they may help with?

I wish you all the best...like I said, I know what you are going through...
