When I lived in Springfield, Mass about 20 years ago, there was a program where one could buy an older house from the city for about $3 (no, I'm not kidding) and then you could turn around and get another loan from the city and fix the place up. The catch: it had to be restored to its original era and you had to live, not rent, in this house for 3 years.

Not for $3, but there are programs. However, these homes are in an area that may not like, according to another post that you wrote. Are you still considering the federal rural home loan programs?
This is one that I am aware of. If you contact them, they will send you a packet of information. The sale is contingent on you having financing for the rehab in place.
