Hi, We have a place in Waynesville North Carolina and are thinking of selling. The Asheville area does not really have the feel of a southern town, it's liberal, not conservative. We are exploring other places and wondered about Maryville. Is it more of a traditional southern, conservative area?

Default Hmmm...

Maryville meets both criteria actually. I would say it is conservative relative to the Asheville area so in that sense it would meet your definition of a "southern" town -- however, many many transplants from Ohio, Michigan, Florida, etc., have made it less "southern" as far as the people. It is a nice town.

Check out Athens, GA. That may be more of what you're looking for.

Oh, Athens. They have such a lovely town. I love all of the old, large southern mansions.

Athens GA is really a nice town with lots of beautiful neighborhoods. However, I'd hardly call it "conservative" at least when compared to Maryville. Plus, Athens is growing like wildfire thanks to the university and its proximity to Atlanta's burgeoning suburbs. It's slowly losing its small-town mystique.

Maryville's not a little town anymore, either, but I do think it's still got that small-town appeal and conservative political bent that the original post is talking about.

If you're looking for "Mayberry" try Mt. Airy, NC.

I think if you are looking for a really conservative small town try Cleveland TN.

hikergirl,

If you're looking for an "old school" southern town, one that isn't 50% FL/Ohio/Michigan, look at Southwestern Virginia, the smaller towns around the tri-cities, and into Northwestern NC.

Abingdon, Wytheville, Hillsville, VA up to Roanoke would probably be your thing. You'll feel like you stepped back in time. Notherners typically don't retire there like they do to the promotional areas of East TN, Maryville, etc. As far as conservative goes, there's no more conservative spot in the US.

Best of luck to you!
