I have a neighbor that already has a existing chain link fence and informed me that she was going to have it removed and put up a six foot wooden privacy fence. Right now the Chain link fence sits ~ 4" to 6" on her side of the property line/pin. Is there a required distance that needs to be followed when you raze the height of the fence in Knoxville? As I have seen my neighbor looking for the property lines and the pins.

This would be a local code, so its either Knox County or The City of Knoxville.
This is only a guess, but I think they can put the fence right ON their property line.

They should probably have a professional survey done to make sure EXACTLY where the property line is, because it would be pretty expensive to have the fence moved if its found to be on the wrong side of the property line at a later date.

she should move the fence inside her property line, otherwise if it is right on the line, you can take it down. (watch the fur fly!)

I guess I should have said it better. The fence needs to be on her side of the line, and not have any part OVER the line. Most fence companies will install a couple inches from the line.
But a survey is really important to make sure where the line is.

If you put up a privacy fence do you have to put the nice side facing out? That's the code here in FL, if the people get a permit to install. Depending on where you live weather it is enforced or not.

It's a universal custom that you put the nice side facing out.

Distance from property lines can be critically important. Hubby is a real estate lawyer in FL. I have heard horror stories about situations where fences were put too close to the adjacent property line. Find out what the legal code is before you put up the fence!!! Ask a local real estate agent or lawyer who knows for certain, or call your local government.

Good Luck

I think the city of Knoxville has a limit to the height of a fence in the front yard.

Also is there requirements about the material the fence is made of, like wood or metal (chain link)?

You should inquire at Knox county and check the home owners association requirements. Many sub divisions have regulations about materials and heights. Like I said earlier, most fence companies will put it just inside the property line.
