Someone wants my wife and I to babysit a 5 year old girl on Fridays and Saturdays every other weekend... Probably be watching her for up to 8 hours... What rate should I charge them that would be fair for both parties. Hint: they are neighbors!!

IMHO: If you are charging them and they are willing to pay you, it doesn't really matter that they are neighbors. My wife just said, "Don't do it!" If you have same-age children, maybe have the neighbor's girl over for an occasional "play date" to help out instead. Maybe they can reciprocate...

Otherwise, this is a business transaction that has some issues to be sure. It would be best to nail down the specifics (just like a certified Day Care would) and figure out what would be expected of both parties. Maybe, you should call a nearby Day Care to see what they charge for the facilities they have as well. Without their certifications, you should not expect the same rate but you will at least know .

You may think this is over the top, but before you attempt to charge anybody for child care services, you might want to check on (at least) local regulations that can be a problem the moment money has changed hands. For one child, it should not be a problem. What looks like a win-win, is usually not in the best interest of government over-reach like we have today. It can be hard to be a "good neighbor" sometimes when anything can happen.
