I’m looking to move to Knoxville in the near future (after accepting a job offer of course). I’m just debating on whether living in Knoxville, or in a town right outside of Knoxville. Any advice? Thanks!

Have you checked the info on the other threads about the area?
I'd yes, then you'll still need to be much more specific.
What are you looking for in a place to live?

Budget is usually the decision maker. Where can you find what you can afford?

What are you hoping to find and how much can you pay if you find it?

The rule is you have to visit and get a feel of the area.

First get a job then look at the small towns in that direction and look in the city. It's a lifestyle choice. You'll find a variety of prices in the city and in the towns.

If you live in city proper, you will pay roughly double your property taxes for fire, police, trash, etc.

It swayed us out of the city limits (though I could walk to the line from my house lol). Garbage is $17 a month privately, Rural Metro is $300/yr.

She didn't ask about city vs. county, but about city vs. another town.

I just don't think we have enough info to answer the OP at this point.

Welcome! Tennessee life is going to be drastically different from NY life, but it sounds like you're looking for a change. The main thing you will notice is the slower pace and friendly people. If you're an impatient person used the NY hustle and bustle it may take some adjustment. But Knoxville pretty much checks all on your list. It's about 35-45 minutes to the mountains, and the scenery here in the city is beautiful as well.

I would check out West Knoxville, it's the nicest area of town and the closest to the mountains also. West Knoxville also has all the lakes and best parks. Prices will be higher than the rest of the area but you do get what you pay for. There are lots of new, nice apartment complexes popping up all over the place.

I will say though, as someone who's married to someone from NY state, even in the pricier parts of Knoxville your lifestyle will be considerably less expensive than New York state, let alone Long Island. For example, my spouse's brother and spouse who still live in Rochester make roughly the same income as we do. Their house was $110,000 less expensive (and junk compared to ours) yet our mortgages are nearly the same because of the absolutely insane property tax up there (literally 5xs more than here). That plus the state income tax (TN has ZERO), tolls, more expensive gas, it all adds up. They can't wait until they can move down here, lol.

Welcome again, let us know if you have any more questions!

We don't have any info at all to go on here. For us to be helpful, you are going to have to give specifics of what you are looking for.

Where will your new job be located (which area, not the company name )? How much commuting are you willing to do? Apartment or house? Do you like living in a city, or are you more into rural or suburban life? What is your price range? Are you looking to buy or rent? Do you have kids, and are school district ratings important to you? What sort of amenities are important for you to have nearby?
