I live in Minnesota and plan to go to college in South Carolina but don't think I want to stay there. I don't think I am going to like the southern lifestyle so much and I hope Tennessee is a little different. I will probably graduate with a Computer Science degree so I need a place that offers jobs to people with these degrees. Also, I hate cold weather which is why im leaving MN, my home for 18 years. Will Knoxville satisfy my requirements?

one more question, I am into cars and need to know how strict emissions testing is. thanks!

My husband likes 5.0s, too! Some counties have emission testing, but Knox County does not.

It's hard to say where you would be offered a job. There are a lot of UT grads that are always looking for jobs here, too.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure what part of the southern lifestyle you wouldn't like, but Tennessee is as southern as South Carolina. You'll probably want to keep that in mind.

My opinion is that you're sort of jumping the gun over what you 'think' the south is going to be like versus what you actually know. Our part of the world is portrayed in movies and the media as backwards, uneducated, and silly. It rarely shows it for what it actually is these days, which is a modern area in transition. I've never been to MINN myself, and admittedly I don't have stellar opinions of the people that live there based purely on stereotype. I'm sure people are wonderful there, but I'd never know unless I went. So on one hand, I can't blame you for feeling pessimistic about a region you've never been to, but I also feel that you haven't even lived here yet, so why not try it then make a conclusion?

What is it about the "southern lifestyle" do you find so offensive?

There are a lot of IT jobs out there, but there's a lot of competition among applicants, too. Knoxville is definitely warmer than Minnesota, but it can get cold here. It's been below 0 here quite a few times.

No one in this forum can tell you if Knoxville will satisfy your requirements since that's a very personal thing. Take a few days to come visit and see for yourself. You might even like our "southern lifestyle."

I have not made a conclusion I simply said that I think I might not like it. It just seems too laid back for me and it also seems that religion is taken a lot more seriously then i'm used to . I don't think it's full of racist hill billys or anything.

Also, on Minnesotans. It's odd that you haven't heard good things about us because when i'm on the MN boards it seems out of state folks are aware of a "minnesota nice." Personally, I don't get out much so I can't say if that's true or not. Oh well i'll be glad to get out of here either way. It's the first week of April and it's snowing!

I too like your screen name.............(we have a Cobra heheheheehe)
I agree with the other posters, you need to make a trip, look around and see if it is right for you. Yes there is a difference between SC and TN people, but I can't put it into words, it is just different, however there are also a lot of similarities, mostly the "Southern Lifestyles" so you may not care for TN if you don't like SC but then again, you might and you are the only one that can decide so take the trip. I know it will take you less travel time in the pony hahahahahaha

I don't really have time to go down there though and I need to decide where I want to go to school by May 1! I'm shooting in the dark here. Not good, I know, but I just can't get out there. Not even the Stang will get me there and back over a weekend!
