I bought four small loi fish for my new pond and the next day they were gone. I guess something got them. Do I need to buy big koi fish? I spent fifty dollars , I can't keep doing that. Any ideas on what I am suppose to do?

Yes, go with Koi, nothing will "get" them except cats if they are brave.

Raccoons, cats, herons, large birds, all look forward to the opening of a new sushi bar!
Get big fish and make sure you give them plenty of places to hide.

My dad (roaming around here somewhere) had a fish pond and I know that the coons took a few of them out at their own will. Like garden said, make sure they have some good hiding places, at least a few rocks with crevices underneath so they can duck down if need be...

Blue herons can empty a pond of fish in no time - even big fish. If there are blue herons around, you will need to have nets or some other protection.

The fish also need some rocks or plants to get under for protection.

And water lilies. Fish love to hide under lily pads.

Besides hiding places, plenty of lillies, be sure and keep and eye out, for neighborhood cats, and even dogs . Having a running water falls helps, and again pleny of hiding places with rocks and etc.

Something nabbed two of my koi this week, too. I keep a net over the pond fall and winter, but I usually remove it spring and summer. My pond is more than three feet deep and I have a waterfall and lots of rocks and plants for hiding places, so I've never had a problem before. I haven't seen any blue herons around, but that's what I suspect. The koi were more than a foot long and very swift, so it would have taken something large and wily. Guess I'll leave the net in place from now on.

Sorry, its too expensive to ignore, but bet your neighbors pets, are the feasters. Good luck with the net, and just have to keep your eyes open.

You can try stringing some monofilament a foot or two over the pond. Make it a nuisance for the birds to get to their buffet, and they stop trying to eat your fish.
