I am currently a math teacher, have taught in charter schools and community colleges for the past eight years. I do not have a state teaching license, but love teaching high school math. I really like the Las Cruces area, especially Mesilla. I've heard many areas are wanting math teachers in southern New Mexico. Any thoughts or comments on teaching high school math in this area? I do not speak Spanish but want to learn it. Thanks for your time.
Very hard to teach math in a second language - for some positions you would not be a good choice until you are truly fluent. Your pay at a public school will be greater if you can claim fluency, also. That said, there are also sometimes opportunities at the community college and even NMSU, but in general these jobs are contract jobs and you are on soft money and don't qualify for the benefits. You would need to be eligible to get certified in NM before any public schools can consider you. I think there is a real need for good math teachers, but there are a few hoops even so.
