We had planned to move probably toward the end of August, so DD can start school. I thought I'd better look at the school calendar because some schools start at the end of August around here. This last year, LC started August 11th! That seems incredibly early to me.

Reason: got the date wrong.

Congratulations!!
Yes, the school year here runs from early/mid August through May (last day this year is May 20), with a two week winter break (around Christmas/New Year's) and a week-long spring break in March.
Depending on the grade (6th, 9th), there are also 'early start' programs, so some kids start even earlier. This school year, for example, 6th graders had to report on Aug. 5.
It looks like school starts on Aug. 17 this year, winter break is from Dec. 19-Jan. 5, and last day is May 26:
Wow, we'll have to scurry to get everything ready to get there in time to start school, including figuring out the route we'll take. We're going to have to move ourselves out -- we'll switch off driving the minivan and the moving truck with DH's truck towed.
Yup, back in the 70's when we moved here from NoVA I was 13. I got jipped out of a month of summer that year. Got out in June in VA and went back in August here. I'm just now getting over the trauma.
Arizona is the same way. Accountants have figured out where to place the school year so as to minimize the financial burden of artificial climate control needed for the buildings. As it turns out, starting earlier in August beats going later into June.
