By chance ended up at Lowes on Jones and Craig looking for lunch. Had predecided to have a hot dog at the Lowes hot dog stand. But it was gone.

Looking around the complex we found "Great Links" or at least that is what we think the name was.

Sit at the bar watch the cook do the grill bit. French fries cooked to order. Pretty nice menu...hot dogs in all varities and hamburgers. Sandwiches and such. Beer license so civilized.

Used to be a chain but the chain went belly up...so they struck out on their own...I think doing very well. Good crowd in the place.

Very nice. Recommend it highly everything hot and tastes good.

Relatively cheap. $17 for two with a beer each.

Place is in the Lowes lot on the corner by Jones and Craig.

Thanks for the personal review, cap!

Here's the Yelp directory info...and in the middle of the listing you will see a blue highlighted link to Channel 5 news, apparently there was a story done on this little gem!

Capt,

Is that the place that used to be Chicago Hot Dogs or something like that? I've eaten there one time and it was pretty good as I remember.

It is a great place for lunch. Very colorful. Like a diner you might find in a small town someplace. The original was even better. I think it was called Al's something or other before. I think the new owners took over the place, recipes and all, changed the name, and made menu and other changes that aren't up to the original. Still good though.

It was called Famous Uncle Al's, and it was quite good. They used to have Sprecher's Root Beer on tap, and it was great. I love a good hot dog with mustard, onions, and sauer kraut on it.

It was a franchise...Uncle Al's or some such. Franchise went under so they jumped off and went their own way.

We went back and had a very nice Reuben...I think we will be semi-regulars.

I went there once for a Chicago dog and was not impressed. Now if they served duck fat fries then maybee I would try it again.

A little off topic but.....
For a nice meal with a down home feel-give White Cross Drugs a try.
A favorite of mine for years.
