As first time home buyers, we're really new at all of this. Can anyone recommend a good company for homeowners insurance? Is this something we shop for using a broker, or do we start calling random companies?

Any other tips?

*I'm asking here in the Vegas forum because it seems to be something that varies widely by region. Local experience sounded more helpful than going to the Real Estate forum.

The cheapest by far for me was Western Mutual. Never had to make a claim, so can't speak to how that would go. I've had good interactions with their customer service when I call. You can get an instant online quote easily.

Western Mutual Home Insurance for California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico & Utah Homeowners

Yeah, but that's the key. Anyone can be nice when they take your money. The question is: How are they at paying claims? Unless someone has experienced a loss, I don't believe that they can make an informed recommendation. Therefore, I won't make one.

That said, OP, you may want to check with whomever you have your car insurance (assuming they offer homeowners insurance). Such companies usually offer multi-line discounts to their clients.

we use aaa for multi car and multi home. they have paid a claim fast and no increase to our rate. Triple A is the best. IMHO

We're with Geico...I don't think they do homeowner's.

if you are eligible USAA is a great rated company. I have house and car insurance with them. They paid off a car claim quickly with no hassle. They are rated high by whoever does ratings for insurance companies.

The cheapest is ANPAC, plus they give you back hundreds of dollars at the end of the year if you don't have any claims. They've covered my cars and house for years, and I'm always trying to find a better deal but I never have.

Go to the library & look at Consumer Reports magazine. They rate the insurance companies -- actually, their readers rate the insurance companies through a survey.

One of the best in Consumer Reports that I'd never heard of before is Amica (they don't do a lot of advertising). They've been outstanding for me for the past decade for auto & home & an umbrella.
