I am moving to this area the middle of July. I am concerned because most of the posts I've seen say that the SE/Paradise Valley area of Las Vegas isn't that great. I realize it's an older section of Las Vegas from what I've read. But is the crime really bad in this area? I lived in New York City for 10 yrs so am used to crime but Las Vegas is a different city from New York City. I cannot afford rent in the $700 on up range as I am living on unemployment after being laid off from my job of 7 yrs. I've paid for a couple months rent up front and figure if it's really bad after 2 months I'll move. Just want some good advice.

Also, what area's in Las Vegas would you recommend to be safe in the $600-650 range for a 1-bedroom apartment?

Area is fine. Enjoy it. Older middle class but kind of neat in an earthy sort of way.

I don't have work yet am receiving unemployment. I worked for a large investment bank for 7 yrs before being laid off in February of this year so I will be looking for administrative jobs. I have no problem commuting as I had 2 hr commute each day while living in New York. I am in my early 40's and boyfriend is 35. My boyfriend may be joining me but not sure when.

I know the job market is awful there. This I have heard, but I have confidence that I will eventually find something with my work experience. I worked for a well-known investment company in New York City.

Cheaper...safe areas of Las Vegas that you would recommend?

At that budget you probably are doing ok in that area. You don't really have enough for a higher-end area. I knew some people living around there, they said the area was ok and didn't feel unsafe, but it is older and once you go east a bit past the freeway you are getting into some bad areas. From that location you are in a good commute spot, nothing should be more than 20 minutes away unless you get some outlier job out in Summerlin or along the beltway west.

Thanks for answering Willy702...It's reassuring to hear you say that this area isn't that bad.

I spoke to an apartment broker this afternoon. I am not sure how she found me other than maybe when I was looking at various apartment sites online I entered my email address and phone number so I could view the properties. I've looked at so many apartment sites I can't remember But, she told me that she had a really nice 1-bedroom in Summerlin in a gated community for $650.00. I told her that I had signed a 2 month lease on this apartment, and if I ended up not liking it that I would keep her in mind. Not being from Las Vegas, I really don't know where the nice neighborhoods are (but have since found out from reading posts on this forum and googling online. I also didn't think I could afford the nicer areas until I find permanent work. But talking to this broker gave me some assurance that I could possibly find something in a better area. Something has to come through for me as far as work. I am determined to stay in Vegas as I've always wanted to live there. I lived in Tucson, AZ for a short period so I know what I'm getting into as far as hot weather. I would much rather have 100's temps than 20 below and snow, which is what the weather is like in my home state of Montana where I'm staying now.

Can anyone give me an idea of the job market in Las Vegas as far as companies that may be hiring? I know the construction and casino businesses are laying off. What sectors would you suggest to look? My background experience is administrative/clerical.

Thanks again to the locals who have shared a lot of information and tips!!
