Hello-

I just moved to Las Vegas a couple months ago and am looking for a great place to go that doesn't charge an arm and a leg. I live on the SW side of town and go to UNLV, to give an idea of what parts of town I'm in. I don't color my hair, but I do like to change up my hairstyles often, and I like stylists that know what they're doing.

I used to live here awhile back and would visit often to get my hair done, but unfortunately my stylist moved to open up his own salon in a different city. He went to LA all the time to do hair shows and get updated training, and charged me $45 for a cut, so I was hoping to stay around that price range, up to $55 - am flexible.

I'm reading reviews on salons and even the ones for the expensive salons, though they have a lot of praise, there are an equal number of horror stories. It's very discouraging. Please help!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Have you consulted yelp.com? I'd also be interested in hearing about good salons in Vegas.

I did look on yelp, and was disappointed that there are not more reviews on it. I was going back and forth between yelp and citysearch, and saw the salons citysearch users praised were the ones that got bashed on yelp, and from past experience, I trust yelp more than citysearch. I know from experience that you have to be careful which reviews to read on those sites, as employees and friends thereof will post to boost their score, so I always look at all the reviews, not just the complementary ones, and see what the negatives are. I'm definitely not paying $100 for a haircut, too, which seems to be a popular thing. I know a couple people from work who pay a lot for their very dated mid-90s look, and brag about the cost they paid. Outrageous cost does not equal better style/stylist.

I can recommend my stylist..... His name is Michael and he works at, don't die laughing here, Fantastic Sam's at Flamingo and Sandhill. Cost for a cut.....$15.

K, so you are rolling on the floor now. Let me tell you why I can recommend him. Michael works at FS as his retirement job, just for fun. He was trained by Vidal Sassoon and actually worked with him. Then he owned his own salon in NYC for years. He sold his shop and moved to Vegas but found he was bored with retired life. So he went to work at FS. Anyway, he is quite talented and a real bargain.

LOL! Yeah, I'm kind of scared of going to those really cheap places, as I'll never forget my hair getting messed up in high school when I went there, but you've got me curious now. What's Michael's last name? I'd hate to go there and get a different Michael!

Thanks for the suggestion! Hopefully we'll get others and maybe we can find more of the hidden talent Vegas has to offer.

Tonic salon on sahara and valley view is reaaaally good. I go to Julie, check them out they have a slew of reviews. It's closer to 60 for a haircut but you'll walk out pleased.

My wife and I go to Maya Salon on Rainbow just south of Russell. It is a small shop run by the owner and one or two other part-time stylists. We get our hair cut by the owner, who is very good and very sociable. A woman's haircut, including shampoo & blowdry is only $36. Color, cut and style goes for $85 and up according to her price list. My wife just informed me that she paid $110 for two processes (whatever that means) and that she used to pay about $200 for the same thing in Bethesda. BTW, a man's haircut & shampoo is only $15.

Maria and/or Lupe at Haircolor Xperts on Buffalo and Vegas in the Albertson's shopping center. Can't say enough good things about these two and the prices are great. Maria's color work is outstanding and both Maria and Lupe do beautiful precision cuts.

I don't even know his last name. He's the one everyone goes to and keeps the shop in business. He's in his 60's.

We are going to be in that exact location, Flamingo/Sandhill on my birthday in another month or so. I know that Fantastic Sams is not in the Starbucks/Charjm shopping center. So is it in the Smiths shopping center?
I suppose i could wait another month for a haircut. I'd like someone with hair knowledge that doesn't cost a fortune. Michael sounds like the best bet.

I went to Charjm(not a typo) before, and a lady in her 70's made me look like i lived in the 1930's before I left. Was not happy. The second time, I had my hair done by the lady that does my husbands hair. Was not pleased. I have went to Great Clips many times and have been ok with the results. But they have such a turnover in those places, I could never get the same lady twice. I did find a few that did hair very well, but they would be long gone before I went back. Hate that.
