You can appeal. See the assessors web site. You must do it now. Has to be filed by mid January.

Say a little more about why you are surprised.

The property value has deteriorated drastically since the economic down turn took place, and even though the accessed value was decreased for the coming year by a small fraction, we are quite certain that this value is exaggerated .House sales in this area have gone down drastically and the cost of construction would be substantially less now then we build the house. These are some of the reasons that should be considered when determining the accessed value.

Send me a DM with your address. I can probably give you an opinion at least.

Funny, I remember when I got my first rate reset two years ago on my 5-year fixed ARM. The rate was going from 4.5% to 2.875% and the payment was going down almost 20% as a result. Then after disclosing what the rate and payment were going to be, they had a phone number to call if I wanted to contest the rate change. Then it had a phone number to call if I would suffer a hardship to make my new payments.

I wonder if anyone called those numbers?
