You don't have a job lined up but you have plenty of cash to last you two years in Las Vegas.

You have a college degree and plenty of experience in your highly competitive field. But, unfortunately, you don't have any local contacts (yet).

You also have solid, part-time income that could, at least, pay for your food after your money runs out, if it got to that. Also you have other savings and credit that could give you another 6 months of living income in an emergency.

Now...

Do you think that the LV job market is so tragic that even this is too dangerous to move to Las Vegas? Or are you confident that the market is still bad but turning around so that your chances will be better in 2013.

P.S. - Waiting a year or two to move is not an option.

Thanks for your opinions!

This article is very important whether your looking for a job in order to move here or not. This shows that the local economy isn't finding it's footing yet.

Las Vegas tops list of places job recovery has failed March 16, 2011 By Rich Coleman At this point, it doesn’t come as a surprise but rather as a grim reminder. According to the Business Insider, Las Vegas tops the list of 11 metropolitan areas where job recovery has failed.

I moved here in fall of 09 with less than 5 months of expenses with no job lined up and found employment in about a month. I actually turned one job offer down before I landed my first job because I knew I could get better. That may sound crazy but when you know, you know. It's all about the attitude and knowing what it is you're going after. Don't even think about it with some hazy idea of where you want to work. Know exactly the type of work you want, preferably where at and what you can bring to the table.

If you are a technie there are better places...and that is basically permanent. If you are in construction the town is likely down for 5 years or more and I would not touch it.

Otherwise it is about the same as anywhere in the SW.

With your resources you can do a year and then evaluate.

Our friends moved to Vegas from the Pacific Northwest last summer. They were given the same doom and gloom...don't move there, you will never get a job and you will blow thru your money! They didn't listen, came here and he started job hunting. Within 3 weeks he had 4 job offers. He's in the automotive bus. Now....3 important factors...
1. He had good job refs.
2. He passed credit checks and drug tests with flying colors.
3. He had enough money to keep him going for at least a year.

So....don't think it's impossible. Getting a job in the casino industry is difficult at best. I've heard stories that the medical field is looking also...(keep in mind that a hospital needs accountants, HR, computer people etc.).
Good luck, housing is certainly priced right!

Can you give a little bit more information about your Bachelor's degree and prior work experience? Having a degree doesn't mean much these days and it's hard to rate you chances without more knowledge of what you studied and, more importantly, what you have done.

We did just that and made it 5 years and it would have been longer. (Granted it was easier years ago to come and get work the same week)Now are coming back "home" to Henderson w/ less than 1 years $$ so I can answer better soon. Should not be a concern as we both are qualified in many areas and have the drive to exsist in Las Vegas w/ our 3 kids.

You keep making that statement.
Depends on what you mean by "techie."
Of course there are going to be certain types of tech jobs in any city including Las Vegas just like every city has to have medical jobs and auto repair jobs even when the economy is bad.

I am going to take the opposite stance on this issue. You could probably get a job in Vegas now, but you are most likely to lose it in the near future. The reason why is the federal government is beyond bankrupt and is monetizing our debt which is causing inflation. It will continue to get worse and worse. As airline prices start to skyrocket, expect Vegas to suffer immensely from the declining tourism numbers. There will be massive layoffs because of this, but I do not know when it will happen.
