I don't know the Vegas area very well and am concerned about safety around
1)UNLV
2)the airport hotels
3) area around the premium outlet mall south of the strip

If staying in a hotel around these places, is it safe to walk around these areas at night?
Are these 3 areas desolate, or are there amenities (fast food, CVS, etc.) nearby

Big thanks!

That takes in a lot of area. What hotels are you talking about?

The campus itself is safe enough, but the surrounding area is a little sketchy.

I don't know of any airport hotels, nor any that close to UNLV, unless you mean some of those on Paradise Rd. It kind of depends on how late at night you would be walking.

I can't see much reason to walk near the outlet mall. Walking anywhere in Las Vegas means kind of long distances. That's why we all have 3.2 cars per family. I'd rent one if I were you.

You'd rent a family or rent a car?

Around UNLV, the hotels I was thinking of were Embassy Suites or Hard Rock Hotel

Around the Airport, was considering Marriot Fairfield Inn or Homewood Suites

Around the South premium outlet mall - Marriott, Hilton Garden Inn, Staybridge

A family. They would have an extra car you could use.

I'd probably go with Hard Rock, but I'd still want a car to go more than a block. Near the outlet mall is probably the safest I'd think for walking. I just can't think of where you'd want to walk to. Paradise Road has never been the garden spot of Las Vegas. It has a lot of businesses, but it also is in one of the most dangerous parts of town, even in the daytime. Las Vegas isn't really bad like Detroit or Washington, DC, but east of the Strip is our bad area. You know you can get good deals on the Strip don't you? If you plan on being out walking, that would be the safest place.

This makes me wonder how safe the hotels are that we sometimes choose when we travel. The cheaper ones are never in the best areas.

I'd second the Hard Rock. There's a CVS and IFRC a Subway across the street. Even better the Hofbrauhaus and Terrible's Casino with a very good and cheap cafe are in walking distance.

Just be aware that the Hard Rock Hotel can be loud and rowdy.

I did some more research and it seems the areas around the South Outlet mall is not that safe.
Which means the hotels around the outlet mall would not be ideal.

Paradise road runs through the airport and leads to the south outlet mall --- so all is unsafe?

The area directly west of UNLV - is this area much better wrt safety? Looking at some options

If you plan to be out walking around at night and safety is your main concern, then neither east nor west nor north nor south within two or three miles of the Strip is safe for that. The Strip itself is relatively safe. The further west you go from the Strip the safer the neighborhoods are. Nowhere east of the Strip is very nice. Henderson is pretty good, and the far south valley, and the far north valley.

Maybe you should explain what your plans are. Are you here on business and want a cheap hotel? Does it have to be close to where you will be conducting business or whatever? If it's a vacation then get a room on the Strip and don't venture off the Strip except by car, or maybe by bus. But if you ride the bus make sure you know where your stops are.
