So, an amazing thing happened. I found a real job opening in my field. Great salary, full time, with vacations and benefits. That doesn't happen every day. I am excited to do the online application.

No resumes will be considered. The application is a multistep process. First all the normal stuff. Then they want you to write a series of essays about things you did in your previous jobs. The application takes 8 hours to complete. I have great references at the ready, a VP from my former company, and a CIO/CEO who was a customer.

And this is for a technical job. I'm not applying to be a writer or an editor. But the good news is, I made it into the pool! I actually got an email saying I was there. I am crazy excited that a prospective employer even looked at my application.

Back in the good old days, hardly a week went by that I didn't get a job offer or some kind of query. Will I get this job? Probably not but there's hope. Depends on how many people are in the pool. But at least I'm swimming with the rest of them!

Well, to start most agencies will hire you as an independent contractor to save money while treating you like an employee. Then, if you're lucky you may get 10-20 hours a week which involves you driving all over the city on your own dime. Most of the families you will be working with have already had people working with them prior and expect nothing more out of you than to baby sit them and get them out of the house. The kids issues are so systemic that absolutely nothing hardly ever changes without addressing the family issues. Unfortunately, your hands are usually tied in that area.

It will become real clear very fast that all of these agencies around the valley are set up for one and only one purpose. That is to team up with lazy abusive families that are already milking the system and join up with them in a collaborative effort. You will be working with kids who will have full fledged melt downs in public (I've had my share of this in several jobs) and you'll be lucky to ever get a thank you. You will also be putting yourself at risk of significant lawsuits if you make one wrong step. That $10-18 an hour will quickly look more like $200-400 a month after you realize you're filling up your gas tank every 3-4 days on your own dime. Meanwhile the people 'running' the agency are swimming in $30+ for every hour you work, driving home in Jaguars and BMW's. Mind you, doing little beyond submitting billing claims and stopping by the office every now and then.

Sorry to sound so cynical but I wouldn't wish these jobs on my worst enemy. I think I'd rather go work in a call center than go back to that. I still thoroughly enjoy reaching out and helping people but nothing about the current mental health industry seems to be even remotely about helping anyone.

Why don't the state run their own mental health agency like other states. I actually like the mental health field. Since I have been in Nv-they told me that since my degree isn't in a social science field, that I couldn't get paid as a Pst. Which is weird because I used to be an clinician in another state, working in a residential treatment center. But I agree most of these private start up companies are just doing it for the money. Heck my old boss started his own group home and he was receiving about 70-80,000 just for one client (tax free)some states are closing the state mental health hospitals and letting clients into the community. BTW if you are transporting clients in your car, then you would need to change your car insurance I think- which is mostly likely going to go up. Yeah, If a company car is not provide for the clients then I wouldn't take the job.

Judging from the way things have been going, mental health is likely behind education in Nevada's budget. That doesn't say a heck of a lot but other states aren't really that much better. Yes, you're right I forgot about the insurance portion. That added another couple hundred right there.

Starbux, from what I've read, is a pretty good place to work. They are hiring. Being a barrista is a pretty fun job.
