It was my impression that you couldn't get anywhere in Vegas without an Ed Hardy shirt (3 sizes to small), fake tan, and slick back hair...

Do I need to return all of this stuff to the store?

Dress for the job you want.

I just applied for a position in a high-end kitchen. Showing up in my uniform with my gear scored me some major points, and I was able to audition in the kitchen that same day because I showed up ready for work. I think I did well. But we'll see.

Go to the craps pit at any major casino. Look at the guy behind all the chips at the table. That's how to dress for success in Las Vegas.

Not if you're applying for cook. Or stripper. Or cocktail waitress. Or Cirque de Soleil dancer.

I stand by my advice -- dress for the job you want. If that job is "pit boss," dress like a pit boss. Otherwise, use common sense.

I was just visualizing you in combat gear auditioning for Mess Sgt. in the Army.

There are other sorts of uniforms. Ours is older than what the US Army issues, being invented by Escoffier after all.

I think the jacket is a must have. Inside is cold and outside is blazing hot. You have to be prepared for both extremes. Or sometimes, I will do a sweater instead of the jacket.

In our climate, I have no problem with people dressing more casually, especially if they are outside a lot. But if you are ripped, torn, worn out, and not ironed, I won't buy what you are selling.

Realtors are a good example. They can be outside a lot, tromping through vacant houses. Honestly, suits don't make sense for them. I would much rather see them in casual clothes that fit properly and are in good repair. Wear something that makes sense for what you do.

Maybe those sharp knives you were juggling in front of their faces had something to do with it, also.
