Las Vegas belongs to the tourists. Most of its residents are from someplace else and are not native to the area. There's never a chance to create community bonds...because everybody has an idea of what it should be like based on their areas of origin. Not to mention the giant revolving door that it is...not much can take root.

I'm wrong about Las Vegas belonging to the tourists??? You better talk to your mayor...and ex-mayor...Tourist Satisfaction is/was top priority to him/her. Without the tourists, Las Vegas, as you know it, just would not exist.

It's really a very simple formula: Increased tourists and tourist spending = Las Vegas grows. Decreased tourist and tourist spending = Las Vegas shrinks.

Tourism is LV's bread and butter...without it, you don't make bread...and you couldn't make butter. Only crumbs would be left.

Getting back to the op.....

Hi and Welcome to the US and Las Vegas. I came to the States in 1964 and spent all my time in NY state until we retired to LV this past spring.

There are certainly differences as you'v probably already discovered. My experience is that there are friendly people in both NY and LV - there are also idiots in both places. Just like anywhere else it takes time to establish friendships - I'm sure you will and I'm sure you'll find your community. We're in Summerlin and I'm already making friends, and loving the life out here.

I wish you all the best and hope you connect with people you like soon.

BTW - what part of England are you from - I was raised in Swanage.

Pam

Besides....I recently helped a LV local successfully plan her husband's birthday by suggesting a place for her to have it.

Did you bring some Dairy Milk with you?!

You'll settle in pretty quickly. I moved from Ireland last year and have settled in already. There'll be differences in cultures (obviously) but for the most part you'll feel comfortable. You get a lot of American things in England anyways so it won't be 'foreign' to you.

I can't help with community pools in your area. There's a pool in the apartment complex we rent in so we just hang out here. Desert Breeze has a pretty decent complex if you want to go in winter.
You'll have loads of time to check them out before next summer. Even coming from Ireland, there's not much pool time left this year!

Thank you everyone for your replies and links they have been very useful.

Firstly I would like to say everyone I have meet so far in Vegas has been very friendly and helpful, including this site - well almost everyone;-)

If you don't mind I have another question.

My son aged 10 plays soccer and wants to continue over here. From what I understand (probably wrong) there are two types of leagues for kids. One that costs a fair amount to be part of and a big commitment. The other recreational league, costs are lower and they are more flexable. Please correct me if Im wrong.

Does anyone know about the recreational leagues, Ive heard of Rainbow League but they are full.

Im in Vegas for 2 years and hope to enjoy it as much as possible, so if you dont mind Ill pop on now and again for info.

Thanks again.

P.S Im from the North - Lake District, forgot the Dairy Milk but remembered the tea bags:-) and my mums bringing the Jaffa Cakes over in November.

You really said this? Sounds like my kids. I'm curious, does Buzz go to the NY forum and spout things he doesn't know about? If not, why would this comment even matter?

EVERYONE know that LV is about the tourists and the revenue they bring in.

And if you were wrong, would it matter to you? Who cares what the bread and butter is? And you forgot one important component in your formula: it takes people to cater to those tourists...EVERYDAY, every minute of that day, 24 hours, 7 days a week. Hence, a community forms. Yes, they come and go, but even so they create a community that works for them while they are there. That is a great thing, especially in a city as large and diverse as Las Vegas is. You have no idea why OP had to move there. At the very least, we can make them feel welcome. Someone asking about community is how a community begins. People with children might have it somewhat easier as they at least deal with a school community.

Obviously, your brother likes it enough to stay and so do many more. I read many posts confirming that. Every day I read about things going on in the communities for the locals. So, it is there if you want it. There is something for everyone. Maybe you should be out enjoying your wonderful NY community instead of spouting negativity on this forum when you have never lived in LV. Visiting doesn't count as then you are just part of your own formula, a tourist. And Las Vegas welcomes you.

BTW, there are so many crackpots that write in this forum, that deserve crackpot answers, this wasn't one of them. Your strength in the Las Vegas forum is with those posts.

First of all, welcome. I'll be visiting your area for Christmas this year. Never been to the Lakes before.

Next:

You can buy Dairy Milk (and all Cadbury chockies), Weetabix, bangers, HP sauce, Jammy Dodgers, Wheetalos, Shandy, pasties, Heinz Beans, Pims, curry sauces, chutneys, etc., at International Marketplace at the corner of Tropicana and Decatur. Beware, everything is quite dear.

(You can also buy everything from every other good-food civilization on Earth there. It isn't Harrod's or Harvey Nick's, not by a long shot. But it's good for when you want to make a proper breakfast.)

Better bangers can be found at Village Meat and Deli, at the corner of Tropicana and Eastern. But they don't carry anything British other than the bangers.

We don't have a proper pub in this entire city. Not one. It's all smoke-filled video-poker sports bars here. Turn one of your rooms into a pub instead. That's what I did -- snooker and darts, draught ale and everything.
