And are we supposed to buy these for ignorant/irresponsible neighbors? I'll bet half of them wouldn't use it if it was given to them, free.

They seem to want a barking security system.

HOAs should let the people living in the neighborhood vote if dogs should be allowed outside or not. My vote would be that all dogs are to remain inside unless they are with the owner.

Who is with me?

Anybody??

I have 2 dogs. Bear is too old fat and lazy (choc lab) to bother with barking.

Thie April we took my brother's dog (he's sick and can't take care of her anymore). She is a 1 year old Blue Heller and Rat Terrier. She barks!!

What I don't get is don't the owners get sick of the barking?? Bella can only bark for so long and then either I get on her or the hubby does. I can't stand it. And the other thing is the people who live behind us have to small dogs that bark copnstantly and they get her going. We discipline her and bring her in but they are still out there barking.

Doesn't it bother THEM to hear the barking???

I agree. I have always said that if the dog is outside, the owner should be too. My dog is never out alone. I have a fenced in yard and still never alone.

Most of these replies seem to be from non-dog lovers/owners. Where dogs are concerned I'll defend the dog before the owner, but I don't have much respect for anyone who doesn't like dogs. My wife and I like dogs better than people because dogs are better company and are always loyal.

Personally, I appreciate the neighborhood dogs. Dogs bark for a reason. Usually, they are warning their human pack that danger is near, or they are simply lonesome and are calling to make contact with the pack. Our dogs bark a little bit, but I've only had one complaint. That was a next door neighbor whose daughter stayed in bed all day while her boyfriend ran out every 20 minutes to sell drugs. He would park his low rider with loud mufflers right in front of our side gate, then rev it up 10 times whenever he started it, which was every few minutes. He would drive around the block and park on the back street for a few minutes waiting for his customers, and then he’d come back and start the process all over again. Our dogs would naturally run outside and bark at this intruder.

A couple of years ago there was a burglary next door on the other side. I came home when the police were investigating, and one came over to warn me about it. But, he said, I should be OK because he had knocked on my door and the dogs barked at him; in other words, doing their job. I don’t know if my dogs heard the break-in and barked, and admittedly, I don’t know if they get carried away with barking when we aren’t home. But I don’t think so. Most of our neighbors say they never hear them.

The neighbors behind us have three labs. The youngest one has barked all night and all the next day when left outside while the owners were away. He has matured and is better now, but at first it bothered me at night. Now it doesn’t happen as much, and when it does I just pity the dog for being left alone, and I figure it will probably keep the neighborhood safe for a while. My dogs ignore the neighbor dogs, so if mine bark I know to take a look.

I do think dog owners should have dog doors. I think it cuts down on a lot of excessive barking. We rented from a friend once who had a German Sheppard, so the dog doors were big enough for a sumo wrestler to go through. I asked him if it was a security problem, and he asked me, would you go in a house with dog doors that size? Good point.

Why Dogs Bark: Stop Excessive Barking

This I totally agree with and was going to say also. As much as it bothers me, I wondered the same thing. To me constant barking is like a Chinese water torture. I don't want to slam the dogs, I want to slam the owners. It is so irresponsible. I could NOT stand when my dog barked. I had a Lhasa and at first he was great, didn't bark at all and then he found his voice. Ugh. Drove me nuts. I would call him in at the first couple barks and he didn't want to come in, he wanted to bark. He never barked inside the house, even when someone came to the door. I guess he was just enjoyed conversing with blowing leaves and squirrels!

I'm in! And I am not an animal hater. Just bad owner hater. If you can't give them attention, you shouldn't have them. When my husband moved here, my dog didn't get the attention he needed and should have back in MI. I didn't send him here because we never knew when my husband would be working out of town. So, I did the responsible thing and found a wonderful man (he loved men!) who worked out of his home and treated his dogs like royalty! I do miss having a dog, but I know that we just don't have the lifestyle right now to give one the attention it needs and deserves. I am grateful for those who do.

Unfortunately the outdoor unit only works for 50 feet. About 50 to 70 feet short for us. Thanks for the link, though.

I started that other thread but the replies were ridiculous so I had it locked. I have two dogs and one is a bit obnoxious. I let him out for a few minutes and as soon as he gets bored and starts barking I let him in. He is never outside unattended between 10pm-8am. My other dog sleeps outside sometimes but she will only bark if something is especially threatening. She may go weeks without making a noise. I just don't get how someone can think it is OK to leave a barking dog outside at dawn. It is an action that is hard to defend and hard to approach respectfully because obviously the other side is inconsiderate.
