Not really a loose cannon -- just that it's EASY to lose 10 games of blackjack in five minutes. Just when you think the cards can't get any worse, bam! Lady luck hands you a 16 (and not eights, either) against the dealer's face-up king.

I have always wanted to learn. Now I've played the penny ante stuff with friends but that's it. Where do you start?

Pick a game to learn. I suggest limit hold 'em. Your losses will be a lot slower in limit vs no limit hold 'em. Also, to play limit well, you need to learn the math basics of poker, and those basics will apply to any other game you decide to learn later.

Once you have picked your game, find a reliable, easy to read, instruction book. There are many available. Reliable means a book with sound strategies based on math with appropriate deviations. Easy to read means he book will not get so far and deep into theories and probability that it is hard to connect the instruction to playing poker. A good website for locating good poker books is here. This is a good starter book by Ed Miller. One of the first books I read was Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones. Miller and others have criticized Jones as being too conservative, but the Jones book is also a good place to start.

Good luck!

That aside, I don't bother. I paid attention in statistics class. The first time I visited Las Vegas (before statistics), I played BJ at MGM and managed to play for almost a full day while scarfing down all the free drinks they brought. I "lost" $100, but drank more than that in free Scotch. The next time I visited Las Vegas (after statistics), I lost a C-Note in roughly five minutes and said, "T'hell with this."

I'm still of the "T'hell with this" mindset.
My Mom used to slap me upside the head when I ventured too close to the slot machines in the grocery stores. I don't gamble at all. Besides the slap, they don't pave those casinos in marble because they are losing money, do they?
