Get a strip view room at the rio (masquerade suite high floor) or on a lower budget the Orleans (strip view)
or if you want them outside your window and exploding - Ceasers

In my opinion, the hotel you stay in should be based upon where you intend to spend New Year's Eve. You want to be close enough to walk back to your room - as transportation systems will be overwhelmed both on The Strip and on Fremont Street.

Me - I'll be on the balcony of my condo watching the people and waiting for the fireworks.

I usually recommend Fremont but for NYE, the strip is pretty awesome.

I'd probably go with the strip. I have heard that on NYE some casinos will only allow hotel guests in at the peak hours. You might want to check out that possible restriction. It may influence your choice.

Both Fremont and the strip suck on nye. It is so packed you cannot even move. We lost one friend within 10 minutes, and then within 30 minutes, I lost both friends and had to walk home. I recommend going OFF strip for nye.

Spoken as a true local. But, consider, if you are coming to LV at that time you would have to think you would be coming into the crowds. Like I would NEVER consider Times Square on NYE. NEVER. Even when people and crowds didn't bug me! If you go off Strip, you might as well stay in your hometown, I would think.

There are certain things that everyone should experience at least once in their lives, and Times Square on NYE is one of those things. Another would be Bourbon Street at Mardi Gras.

Are these the best times to visit those places? Absolutely not!

Are being part of the crowds on these occasions something to be experienced? Absolutely!

Yes and no....you could come to Las Vegas and spend nye off strip, and then the next day on the strip when it is not as packed. Seriously, it was so bad last year that I told my friends they are going by themselves next time. I felt like I was in a mosh pit, and was glad to quickly go home.

With the entettainment package for NYE I fully recommend the FSE....it usually runs aroud $40 a person which keeps the panhandlers n stuff out and the entertainment is great....plus it isnt as crowded as the strip cause they charge for it......
