Some stats say NV is one of the most dangerous state (I think its #2) but if you look at the most dangerous cities, 4 california cities are on the top 25 and no NV cities? Go figure? Per capita numbers? Absolute numbers?? who cares!, I certainly dont care because it has nothing to do with me feeling safe or unsafe. Its all numbers to me that are not accurate (high or low)
Personally, I like to know the stats and don't take them for granted. If the stats say that it's not safe to be somewhere, liek certain areas of the valley, then I'll play the percentages and avoid those areas. I don't need to be mugged first, or constantly be reminding myself that "this isn't bad, California is worse." That's all relative; something's always worse. The huge rise in violent crime is troubling. I don't care what California's crime is, or anywhere else, I live here.

I totally agree. Stats are bogus, and you have to look at crime at a smaller scale(not as a whole state or whole city, but maybe neighborhoods..etc.) I dont take stats for what they are because they are just a number and has no meaning to me and they dont calculate other factors in. There are places here in LV that are just as "unsafe" as other "unsafe" areas in LA, Miami, New York City..etc.. Bottom line is you have to use your head because you cant avoid crime all together because it is a random thing, but you can lower your chances of being victimized.

Crime stats are like rumors and the headlines in the supermarket rags...they may not be 100% accurate, but there is usually something behind it.

Crime statistics are awful...filled with errors and under-reporting and deliberate falsifications.

Unfortunately they are also orders of magnitude better than anything else available.

Did you guys not watch the thread where the Summerlin Vista folk got all concerned about being over-run by crime? Hell they are likely the safest neighborhood in the Valley and safer than rural upstate NY...which, by the way, ain't all that safe.

I also think I will chart out the robbery/agravated assault data...I am curious as to whether it is inner city related or wide spread.

This is a place where I agree with ack^3. Such a sudden and Las Vegas specific increase should be fullu understood and fixed quick.

Yes olecapt, but beautiful upstate NY is not making the national headlines with its crime.

Neither is Las Vegas...the size of the bump was newsworthy not the actual level.

Spoken like a true statistician....

However if a particular parameter in a test jumps well outside its historical bounds as well as those of similar examples you would investigate would you not?

Welllllll as long as I have not had a crime comitted against me, nor has anyone that I KNOW had a crime comitted against them and I've survived this way for 45 years, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Las Vegas is a safe place to live.
