Had this discussion with someone who says he wants the 24 hour lifestyle and is considering moving to LV for it. By my recollection there really isn't anything outside casinos which is open any longer than you'd find in most cities. What am I forgetting that is open longer than normal?

Grocery stores, bars, gas stations, Walmart, Dennys... pretty much everything. You can't see a dentist at 3AM, but you can still buy cat food or get a drink.

When I moved here it was a much smaller town and we only had one all night drug store, White Cross. There were only a few all night supermarkets, and not a lot of anything else off the Strip that was open 24/7. But because the town was small, the casinos were a bigger part of everyday life, so it was probably correct to say it was a 24 hour town.

Back then the hotel manager of the Stardust was a personal friend. We were talking one day about it being a 24 hour town as people have always done since the Mormons settled in the old fort in 1852, and had to watch for Indians all night. Anyway, I'll never forget him saying that if he wanted to buy a car in the middle of the night, he was certain it could be done.

What's that got to do with anything? I don't know. I just know the 24 hour question has never been settled, but like the weather, people always talk about it. I was born in a town where they roll up the sidewalks at 9:00PM, but we had two all night restaurants and an all night gas station. There were 32,000 people there. Now there are half that many people there, but a couple more all night places. So is that a 24 hour town?

Other than bars that don't close what medium and large cities don't have plenty of the same offerings?

The Home Depot on Rainbow used to be open 24/7 a few years ago, but I think they have normal store hours now. Walmarts that never close are something I've only seen in Las Vegas. Before it closed, you could get a decent steak at Ruth's Chris until 3AM. There are a lot more 24 hour drive-thrus here too. I can go get a smoothie from the drive-thru at Tropical Smoothie Cafe 24/7.

You're right though. Other than the casinos and bars, other cities have the same. Las Vegas just has more of them.

I don't know, Willy. I've been here for a very long time. You tell me.

I know that I heard "last call" once in a bar while vacationing in California, and it was the first time I had ever heard that phrase outside of a punk song.

Does the rest of the country have 24 hour grocery stores and CVS and such? If so, cool. I just thought we were unique in that way.

Having spent a bit of time in NYC, I think Vegas should be considered the TRUE city that never sleeps. Even the smallest corner bars and restaurants are open 24 hrs.

It was pretty standard in the Washington, DC metro area. The difference in LV, as someone else pointed out, is that many restaurants and neighborhood bars are open 24/7 too. I love the fact that I can get pizza or chinese take out at 3:00am or 4:00am.
