True, 4-5 hours is nothing — if you didn't already work all day, or some similar scenario. I don't see that the OP gave us enough information to determine that.

I suspect it is not legal to simple pull over on the right of way and grab an hours sleep. Get off the road.

Practically a car parked near the right of way may attract a follower who has not had enough sleep. Painful to get awakened by a 60 mph vehicle.

I have done the trip 40 or 50 times. I would not sleep anywhere near the highway.

It's been proven: sleep-deprived drivers are equal to driving drunk!

Wait until they come up with the technology to do Sleep-Deprived checkpoints, determining whether or not you should continue or discontinue driving at some point in time, and ordered to drive to the nearest motel.

The police stop you, tell them: Do you want another "drunk driver" on the highways?

At 62, I can't fathom driving to L.A. anymore in a car! Just couldn't do it, without a dozen stops inbetween! And now with L.A.'s ever expanding light rail/subway lines, you don't need a car down there anymore! Just fly to LAX, take the free shuttle to the nearest LRT stop, get your Tap card and away you go!

If you drive without a break from OC it is 3.5 hours without traffic.

I would say rest at a rest stop. That is why they are there. Or pull over in a town with restaurants and use their parking lot. Despite some snarky comments from some of the posters, if you are someone that might want to rest on the way, ignore the snarkers and do your own thing man.

You might think its snarky but its true that if you can't handle the drive, you can't handle the town!

FWIW I drive 12 hours per day 5-6 days each week. 4 hours is nothing.

The hours you can drive also depends what type of vehicle you have. When I drive to Vegas I go from Orleans, Cape Cod and my first "stop" is Indianapolis (about 1000 miles). I pull into a Crackerbarrell parking lot; nod off for about 2 hours; have breakfast and I am good to go. My Honda truck is nice riding and seats are comfortable.

And then, you get to LV in any way you can (car, plane); if you're tired, you sleep before you do whatever it is you're going to do. Which is, I presume, what the OP had in mind.

It's been awhile since I've made the drive to LA from Vegas, but every time I have in the past, the rest stop has been closed. I would probably just stop in Baker or Barstow. I definitely would not just pull over near the interstate and sleep. Way too dangerous. As LVOC said, some other sleepy driver might hit you.

I did not recommend pulling over on the side of the interstate to sleep. The rest stops have been reopened. They were the last few times I made the trek down and back. So I assume they are still open.
