For once, good news regarding Clark County education.

My youngest graduated from Northwest Tech with a 50k scholarship and received a very good education. I was surprised NW Tech didn't make the list.

It does seem like magnet schools, hands down, is the way to go out here. Good stuff.

Quick question: My daughter won the "lottery" pick for an elementary school recently. Is there a lottery system for middle school/high school? Will we have to reapply for a magnet middle school all over again?

Von, as far as I know, it's a lottery system for middle and high school students as well. I'm. Told that preference is given to kids that previously attended a magnet school, but I could be wrong. Maybe one of our teachers on this board can confirm that?

Thanks, everyone, for the well-wishes. It was nice to see something positive in the news regarding our local schools. So often, we read nothing but bad news about CCSD, but there ARE good schools to be found in the valley.

I know many good teachers in this town. I wish more of them were given the autonomy afforded at the magnet schools.

The lottery only happens when there are more kids applying and meeting the minimum qualifications than there are seats. Some schools have that happen more often than others.

Autonomy is important. But any teacher who is worth their salt will tell you that a student's school success is most closely linked to the importance that the family places on education. The research shows that the number one predictor of success in school is parental involvement. Teacher quality is number two and it is a fairly distant number two.

These magnet schools are great because they exclude behavior problems and apathetic students.

(Sorry, you know I have to chime in whenever there is anything education related.)

A) You don't give yourself enough credit.

B) Nothing to be sorry about. Teachers like you make a real difference and I, for one, am grateful.

You see, the youngest was an apathetic student. He did not want to attend a magnet school. He wanted to go to Shadow Ridge with the rest of his friends, but I insisted.

The teachers at NW Tech absolutely turned that kid around. I did what I could. He didn't go to school hungry and he was deposited there on time each day, but I could not instill the ambition and desire that those teachers imparted.

My hat is off to the teachers of CCSD. They have to fight an apathetic community, a lack of funding, and an often inept administration. They also get to play social worker for the students who really need help. This is no small task.

There are loser teachers out there. Trust me, I've had a few that were little more than babysitters, but the ones who shine.... Well, they shine brightly.
