Back in 1992, I rented a car in Brisbane, drove on down to Melbourne via Sydney. I have to concur I felt very safe every minute I was there. But to do a repeat of Australia?

After you move to Las Vegas, count on it, there'll be surprises you never expected to run into here!

That was stats? It looked like a hearsay letter to the editor written by a guy in Philly.

People cherry-picking statistics about Australia usually, 1) have never set foot there, and 2) use scary-sounding percentage increases to avoid hard numbers.

US Assaults = 1.6 million total (Source: FBI) = 1 assault for every 195 people
Aus Assaults = 171,083 (Source: Australian Institute of Criminology) = 1 assault for every 130 people

If you spent some time living there, you'd also realize that the majority of Aus assaults are bar fights between "cashed-up bogans "(even the working class in Australia usually make over 50k/year and have lots of disposable income for gambling and alcohol)

And gun homicides, forgetaboutit -- there are literally more people struck by lightning in Australia every year than killed with guns

2010 US Gun homicides = 11,078 (Source: USCDC) = 1 per 28,335 people
2010 Aus Gun homicides = 30 (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics) = 1 per 744,000 people

To sum it all up, "Bill in Philly"-style:
Australia has 50% more assaults than US, per capita
US has 2,626% more gun homicides than Australia, per capita

Unless you'd rather be shot dead than punched in the face, Australia is safer.
