The upside to doing it the way LV is doing it is that businesses don't have to change letterhead, advertising, etc to reflect a new code, and it's just not as huge a change as changing existing codes.
People will get used to it, it really isn't that hard. Many metro areas use overlay area codes now instead of geographic breakdowns

Since I live in one of the overlay areas now I almost forgot how easy it was just to have a 7 digit number.

I'm from the last place in America to have five-digit dialing. Up until the late 1980s, we could dial five digits and that was that. Most of the old timers still use the five-digit system when giving out their phone number.

"What's your number?"

"6-5203."

"Thanks, I'll call you tomorrow."

Too be they couldn't have gotten 777. That would be appropriate for Las Vegas

So this will help distinguish the most recent transplants from those that have been here a while. I wonder how this will affect employment?

"Oh, you have a 725 number, we are not hiring right now."

"Come back when you have a 702 number."

Triple-digit area codes are reserved for some reason.
