Just curious why the majority of planes land east/west and very few north/south.

whichever runway allows the least amount of crosswind to the prevailing wind.

Yes and no. While crosswinds can be a factor, the runway of choice is almost always determined by selecting the one that maximizes the headwind component. Noise abatement can be a factor too, especially at night. Almost all aircraft are restricted from operating on runways where the tailwind component exceeds 10 knots, regardless of aircraft performance or other operational considerations.

oh yeah, there are other factors, but the main one being limitation of crosswinds, especially with higher winds. safety of flight and all that. there's a whole decision matrix on what will be the active runway.

i don't think they abide by noise abatement routes at all times. over the southeast, a common 180 turn around for final, they routinely cut the corner overhead instead of turning more over the mountains. this is at night. you can barely hear them inside your home though, what with improvements in jet engine silencing.

Airports always favor certain runways and McCarran favors the east west ones. They are the longest runways. And are convenient to taxi to and from.

The other runways are used when wind makes the 7/25 runways unusable.

Lots of time the wind is low enough that any can be used. They then pick the east west.

I don't know how tight they run things. Some airports will let you choose any runway when conditions are right...I doubt that is true at McCarran.

From all my travels around the US...I have found that most airports have more east and west runways than they do north and south if at all....

Even Military bases have the runways that way.....

Nope. I learned to fly in one of the exceptions and there are many.

I will agree they are more popular in the southwest..probably driven by prevailing winds.
