I am in the research phase of trading my car in for a less expensive car. Any suggestions or recommendations on dealerships? I contacted Honda West after seeing a commercial. Three times, the sales people left me hanging in mid conversation. So I read the reviews for them and am crossing them off my list. This is new territory for me, so I'm not sure exactly where to look. I live on the SW side of Vegas. Thanks in advance.

DO NOT 'trade in your car for a less expensive car'. You'll get hosed on the deal for sure. Never negotiate a car purchase and trade in at the same time, ever.

Find your car in NADA, make an honest assessment of condition and expect a dealer to offer less than low trade in and in some cases a lot less.

braindead is correct... DO NOT trade in your car. In fact, sell it privately and get thousands more.

List it on Craigslist for a little more than you owe. See what kind of hits you get first.

You get a tax credit for the value of the car traded at the dealership, so just make sure you sell it for what they would offer plus the sales tax amount to break even. Even if it is close, I would personally trade it in, as the dealership then assumes all responsibility and liability for it. If you can sell it quickly for thousands more than you are offered on trade, and you don't have to warranty it for any period of time, that sounds like a better plan. I'm not sure about Nevada law regarding warrantying a private sale, I just know that some states require a seller to warranty the car for between 1-3 months depending on year and mileage.

With Craigslist I had a half-dozen serious buyers with cash-in-hand in two days, all willing to paying within $200 of my asking price. This was in Silicon Valley, not Las Vegas, but I expect autotrader.com leads suck just as bad out here.

Next time I have to sell a used car I will skip autotrader.com.

Yeah, every place I've ever sold a car, the "warrantee" on a private sale expires once the car leaves the sellers driveway.

If i remember correctly from a different post, you said you owed 10k on a 2008 Caliber. If so you are very upside down on the loan due to massive depreciation on the vehicle. When you do get a different car, get something that's in demand. Honda , Toyota, etc.... Dealers flock to those vehicles at the auction.
