In today's paper, in some areas of the city, particulate matter rose well above the danger level (100), 138 recorded around Palo Verde school. Until I was diagnosed with COPD, I never gave it any thought to wearing a mask outside, as it made me too self-conscious. Even my ferret looked at me like I was weird! Now! Even going from the grocery store to my car yesterday, I wore a mask. And even then, it's sometimes hard to avoid any potential damage to one's lungs.

I really wonder how many lungs were damaged during these last wind blasts, reading 77MPH is some areas of the city. How many are trying to cough it all up today!!!

And you? How many others wear masks when these merciless wind blasts tear through our valley, or don't you give a good rip, and suck it all in?

The other nite at work, looking out a the lit-up parking lot at work, I could have sworn it was snowing! No, dust, dirt, sand!

I don't think you need to feel self conscious. People will probably say to themselves, why didn't I think of that? I've seen some people in masks, but not many. It is a good idea though. Saw a guy on a bike the other day wearing a scarf around his face and it wasn't even that windy. You'll see Asians wearing masks so they don't give whatever they have caught to everyone else. We should all be that considerate.

Masks are common in places like Japan -- people who feel a cold coming on wear masks as a courtesy to others. Michael Jackson made surgical masks "uber-uncool." But who cares what Michael Jackson did?
