Hi

This will be my first winter in Las Vegas living in a house and the concept of winterizing is foreign to me(I lived in SoCal for most of my life. ) Do you guys just turn off the irrigation system for winter and drain all the water from the irrigation pipes? not sure how cold it gets here.

thanks!

You can do that but if you just cover the anti-siphon valve you should be OK. I put those styrofoam covers on my hose bibs too. Since it's been in the 20s at night and even lower tonight, I let the faucets in the house drip a little bit.

Have not had a problem with hose bibs but had to repair our anti-siphon valve twice since buying the house in 2010, even after insulating. i would not leave a hose attached to your hose bib.

You posted in the Nevada, not Las Vegas forum

I had to replace the anti-siphon valve too, because it sticks up so high I think. Now it's covered so well it would have to get really, really, cold to freeze it. Remember, your plants need water in the winter time too. It actually keeps them from freezing.

For winterizing, they recommend disconnecting hoses, insulating any pipes exposed to the outside (an old towel will do) and only watering once per week.

If you have delicate plants, and a hard freeze is predicted, water them well, cover in burlap, and if convenient, add a string of Christmas lights.

If you have a pool, make sure your solar system (if applicable) has been drained, and set the filter to run at night to keep the water from freezing. (Ask me how I know this? )

Are you going to be leaving the house vacant during winter time?
