Have your camera at the ready and get photos the next time you see them. Tell them that you know they're not census workers and that you're calling the police, who you will be giving the photos to. You'll never see them again.

Yep. ^^

Unfortunately, if they social-engineered OP into giving up too much personal information, there could be identity theft issues. OP, make sure you monitor your credit reports and carefully shred any annoying pre-approved credit card offers.

Default There is an ongoing census

There is an ongoing census...called ACS.

It generally starts out with written surveys and then phone followup and then personal visits. They strive very hard to get a response from the randomly selected participants. They select addresses not people.

They will follow up pretty hard on a selected address that does not cooperate by written survey or phone.

Ask to see credentials and call the Cnsus Bureau if in doubt.

"obligated to answer." That's scary. Can you plead the 5th?

Just to clarify I never invite them in but just talked to them through security door. Also questions they asked were general in nature. Quite honestly white pages dot com has more usable info for identity theft purposes. They asked the number of people in residence ages, income and employment. Answers I gave were not specific. I doubt if someone was trying to covertly steal my identity they'd be so overt to stay in front of my house until I got home. It's sad that America has come to the point that its Federal workers feel obligated to treat U.S. Citizens in such a manner. And my experiences with them is not isolated but seems to be status quo with some workers if you do a internet search of 'harassed by census workers' or check the census's Facebook page you'll see others complaining of similar experiences.

I worked for the census in 2010, it was a nice gig. Every now and then, youd get the jerkoff that would slam the door in my face, or curse me for knocking on his door. When that happened, more times than not, Id get majority of their info off of white pages. If nothing was listed, I would turn that addresses's survey to another guy, and he'd give it a shot.

I believe the ***** about the census goes all the way back to its origin...and the citizenry has complained ever sense.

The census works the way it does to avoid introducing error that all the other methods do. The really go out and get the info from the citizen. Actually from whoever is at the particular residence but that is another side to the discussion.

It is a necessary evil. Cooperate.

I did cooperate the first time I answered the door and answered their questions. And what did it get me in return ? Federal workers camping out in front of my house. It's not a pleasurable experience when you on three separate occasions in two days come home and you have an uninvited and unwelcomed visitor waiting for you.
