The Las Vegas Water Authority is spending eight hundred million dollars to tunnel under Lake Mead to give Las Vegas a third 'water straw'.

Can anyone advise why the most expensive option possible, a tunnel - which has already cost one life - wasn't considered, when a simple pipe laid along the lake bed would (seemingly) suffice?

Umm you really think they didn't consider a cheaper option first?

I'm no water expert but I know this, they needed to go deeper where in case the water level doesn't rise again. The water near the surface is not as good quality as the deeper water. As for laying pipe along the country's largest man made lake in a National Park...yeah that'll happen.

I'm sure the Park Service would like to see those intake towers that are out there now disappear.
