From the same article: "It's important to note that the Gigafactory isn't quite a done deal yet. Current Tesla partner Panasonic seems reluctant to commit to the factory, calling it a risky investment. There's also questions of whether Tesla can acquire the raw materials it needs for the project and many other hurdles."

It's still not a done deal, but last Thursday, July 31, on a Q2 earnings call, founder Elon Musk confirmed that ground had been broken in Reno in June, and that concrete was being poured... but that a final decision won't be made for another month or two.

Also on Thursday Panasonic announced that they will partner with Tesla on this factory.

Sounds contradictory to say concrete is being poured but there is no decision yet.

Yep. Although I wish Tesla would spell out exactly what made Reno more favorable than Las Vegas.

I think that's speculation. Las Vegas makes a great deal more sense as a transit hub. Those batteries are heavy and need to be moved elsewhere.

I have a feeling it is easier to sell management on moving to Reno than it is to sell them on moving to Las Vegas. Our schools and our sleaze worked to our detriment in this case.

That's speculation, too. But I think it's close to the mark.

Well, Reno's nothing to write home about either. The fact is that Reno is a transportation hub and is closer to Tesla's Fremont manufacturing facility.
