The weather is most important so is the cost of living and Las Vegas is a un predictable city which makes it exciting and interesting and living here allows us to experience that plus going back home into the suburbs to a quiet living environment. Las Vegas has many sub cultures within the glamor of the STRIP the small lounges and etc which locals find or some of us newly transplants trying to become locals find. Gambling is the main employer of this city and tourism is the industry. Las Vegas is unique and ever changing and no matter how much bad PR it gets that only adds to the mystery of Las Vegas which draws almost 40 million people a year. The largest selling weekly news paper in the USA is the National Enquirer why? because us humans want the mystery and thrill from it. Las Vegas offers all of that.

Going on my 4th year in Vegas and I go to the strip at least once a week and still love living here and love the strip...and I don't gamble ever.

Was at the strip 3 times last week...

- to Bachannal Buffet at Caesar's
- to MGM for David Copperfield with tickets I scored for $20 (yes $20!)
- to Cosmo to see a show at Rose.Rabbit.Lie that I got for free.

The buffet was comped because my gf's friend had a ton of points and she gambles.

Buffet price $110 (paid $0)
David Copperfield price $320 (Paid $40)
Rose Rabbit Lie price $280 (paid $0)

That's $710 worth of food and entertainment for $40...

Once a person understands this city will take your last dime and not care you can deal with vegas. I saw a lady pump about $350.00 into a slot machine in about 15-20 minutes playing $1.00 black jack. Not bad for the casino. Then th ed were the guys in the sports book getting blown away by their March madness picks.

Vegas is about betting. Period and what was shown on the show goes on and more. Look at the guy suing over the $500,000 betting bill while he was blacked out drunk.

For the sake of the argument the bottom line is people are allowed to use their money as they wish to do so. It depends what their priorities at the given time of their lives. Some folks may spend $$$ taking their kids or grand children to Disneyland or world. Other people spend $$ on cruises or travel and etc. It just so happens Las Vegas is the adult Disneyland of the USA. All other attractions in the States are just as much of a money grab from the tourist or locals but they use a different venue to get it. Food is cheap here in LV it is expensive in Boston or NYC, parking is cheap here in most major cities it is a rip off. See what I mean the only advantage to LV is if you get lucky you might make some extra money to off set your trip expensive's if you live here it is a extra bonus to your income. If you live in LV be ready to accept it is a tourist town and what come with it. Supply and demand it runs the business world. If people really want to get worked up about a massive country wide rip off that we accept everyday and it is worse than a slot machine think of the BIG $$$ being made off of all of us at the GAS PUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK I am not going to get political here

My wife and I crammed most of the shows into our first year, and then we became bored with it all. We're not big Cirque fans, which adds to the lack of Strip interest. Most of the recent transplants I know could take or leave the Strip -- Most. Some of our friends basically live on the Strip.

We see at least a 20 concerts each year. But the bulk are at the Palms or Smith Center. (And also Eastside Cannery and Sunset Station for some reason.) That's where our favorite bands appear. The fact remains that the Strip is where I go to work -- not to play. If not for work, I would visit perhaps quarterly.

I don't bash Vegas because Vegas doesn't hide who it is or what it's about. I say people should live as they want be it a home or on the streets. I just think it's amazing people are surprised or act like they are when they see crooks on TV or in some news source reporting on Vegas.

Vegas is about money so money will attract all kinds. Good and bad. Myself I don't gamble except for a parlay every now and then during football season but I do have to control myself at buffets. So in Vegas it can be anything to anyone at anytime.

Great post Irishspy.

Thanks Caltovegas I am a transplant here from the east coast and I also get a chuckle about how the media especially back east blows up the Las Vegas news bigger than their own. Funny but they are just giving us free advertisement for more people to visit here One of the reasons I left NYS was the Puritan way of thinking that has existed for 200 years. It is funny how states have lotteries and call it funding for education their churches have bingo but call it fund raising and how they all deny that Las Vegas was funded and built from the corrupt governments unions and vices from many of the eastern cities and Nevada was smart enough to legalize the so call vices and profit from it. I love living here it is not perfect but where is that in the world.

Anyone watch "Millionaire Matchmaker"? One of the bachelors was some fat ugly troll named "Vegas Dave" who claims to be worth $2.5 mil and sells sports picks for a living. The d-bag left during the meet & greet claiming the women werent hot enough for him. Just a total asswipe.

That brings me to Brandon Lang, another loser who sells sports picks for a living. He became famous after the movie "Two for the Money" which he wrote and began touting picks around the time it came out. Since 2005, he has never had a winning year and is down thousands of "Dimes." 100 Dimes = your entire bankroll..... so if your bankroll was $50,000, you would have lost over $1,000,000 following this idiots picks. Yet he continues to brag about how great he is, just another con-artist.

Others have pointed out this season's first episode had a scenario that was actually impossible because two of his plays were actually going at the same time. Obviously CNBC has zero concern for accuracy of facts, it's just edited to tell the best story for viewers who have no clue.
