I have explored the valley by running/hiking/biking more than most locals. For me, this is the reason why I moved here. Great weather year round! I'm coming towards my one year anniversay.

Other than a 6-2 job sitting at my desk, I get out as much as a I can and joining meetups. When you meet people, you learn why they move here. Mainly jobs, tired of the winters, lower housing costs.

If folks are not familiar, the Las Vegas Valley Rim Trail is a tremendous project connecting the rim with overpass construction for pedestrians and bicyclists. Wash trails are fantastic routes to cut through traffic. I have never seen anything like this in other major cities. In one October day, I spent 23 hours pedaling the whole valley clockwise covering more than 120miles.

This city is great for people who retire. I pay $780.00 a year tax on a 3 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage and etc townhouse compared to over $5,000 a year in NYS so car registration can be high but to close the gap of $4200.00 per year saved I would have to own a very expensive car. Cost of living here is about 1/2 of back in NYS. Wages may be low but no state income tax works and especially if you work for tips. You never win paying state income tax.
Driving here is something you have to get use to and do not forget many people are still learning the streets so like in any other city until you get skilled at that many drivers seem bad. The local places are all over so you must look past the strip and venture out to the places hidden in the strip malls and ask people good places to go to.

Need to fix the buying power, not the wage. 8.25 can not buy the same amount of anything as it did even 20 years ago. There are a lot of reasons why. Raising the wage won't help if you still can't afford to buy anything.

I think we'd be a lot better off, if instead of raising the wages, we invested in people. Send people to school for free. The taxes they'll pay at their better job will more than cover the expense, and we'll enjoy a country that isn't completely full of idiots.

As long as they maintain a minimum GPA.

I don't think people are idiots because they don't go to college. College is good to train someone for some careers, but people don't go from dumb to smart just because they put in 4+ years more.

Insurance companies give auto discounts if you graduated from College.

They must have some sort of stat for them to offer this. Maybe even though they are not street smart. But maybe being book smart means less dumb driving decisions?

Is this a Nevada thing? I got asked this when I switch my auto insurance here upon arrival.

I will have to look into a discount for college education. Didn't know about that. I may be missing out.
