The Milwaukee Bucks franchise could be destined for a new city if the plans for a new arena fall through.

Continue for updates.

NBA Will Buy Bucks, Move Team in Absence of Arena Funding
Monday, July 6
Bucks president Peter Feigin stated Monday that the public needs to pay $250 million sooner rather than later or risk losing the team to either Seattle or Las Vegas, per Mark Kass of the Milwaukee Business Journal:

The window is closing...We can't wait months, even weeks to start the public process. [...] The NBA does not want the Bucks to extend the lease in an inadequate facility. [...] This is about building a winner and building a brand and a product...It is similar to what the (Milwaukee) Brewers and (Green Bay) Packers have done.

Feigin provided his thoughts on the tricky situation at a hearing with the Wisconsin legislature's Joint Finance Committee.

Current Bucks owners Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jamie Dinan have combined with former owner Herb Kohl to pledge $250 million for the new arena and are seeking a match from the public. Of those funds, $93 million would come from the Wisconsin Center District in the form of new debt on Milwaukee citizens. The district wouldn't commence repaying the bonds until 13 years thereafter.

Sen. Lena Taylor believes the people of Milwaukee are being asked to pay too much.

"Who has a loan for 13 years and you don't pay anything, but you let the interest run? Who does that? You wouldn't let your kids do it," said Taylor. "And you sure as heck wouldn't do that to your constituents."

According to Feigin, the NBA only needs a $25 million profit to buy the Bucks and move them to one of the two aforementioned cities.

Las Vegas is an interesting, untapped market, while Seattle has been starving for basketball since the SuperSonics became the Oklahoma City Thunder. The latter seems to be a suitable potential destination with a proven fanbase and passion for the game in the area.

The Bucks have a promising young nucleus emerging under second-year coach Jason Kidd. They made a surprise playoff appearance this past season and must have the Milwaukee area excited about the future.

It appears those highly anticipated coming years will be based on whether Milwaukee can strike an arena deal in short order. Otherwise, a potential golden age for Bucks basketball will likely unfold in a different city.

I'm from Milwaukee and moved here two years ago.

I highly doubt the Bucks will be moving. The arena situation is a bit messy at the moment but I think they will get it figued out up there.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to watch my team in Las Vegas... And they are a legit team... But I don't see them coming here.

The problem with Seattle is the same as it was when the Sonics packed up and left town: No suitable arena, and none under construction. If the Bucks are moved, it will probably be here. I suspect that the name would be changed, as the whole deer theme probably wouldn't resonate locally.

Every NBA team looking for a new arena with government funding will use Las Vegas as a potential relocation site knowing full well that their not moving here. Perhaps in the next 5+ years and if the NHL team is drawing willing well, another team will give us a serious look, but it's not going to be the Bucks.

Be nice if a local official told them off and stop using Las Vegas like this. If you come and actually have meetings with local officials and make some discussions fine, but throwing a name out there like this just has to stop.

Yeah, except UNLV athletics currently blows.

I would actually love to have the Bucks come here and get some real support... However, changing the name of the franchise would be devastating to me. Lots of history in that team and it's important to keep that alive. Plus the new logo and color scheme is sick.

That team is on the rise bigtime... They went from being 14-68 two years ago to being 41-41 last year with a first-year head coach and having the no. 2 overall pick in last year's draft miss most of the season.
The only real weakness was the lack of a big man which was addressed a few days ago with the signing of Greg Monroe... Who picked the city of Milwaukee over the cities of New York and Los Angeles.

If Las Vegas were to get the Bucks, it would be one hell of an acquisition... But I feel like this is more fluff than anything.

The city of Milwaukee is EXTREMELY slow with getting things approved for development. Deadlines that the NBA set are fast approaching... We will see how this all turns out in the next month or two.

Pipe dream but I would LOVE to have the Bucks. Jason Kidd getting things done with that team, and just acquired Greg Monroe. This would bring in more money than NHL personally I believe, but feels like hot air from Bucks pres to get things moving for their arena.

No need to change the name of the team. La$ Vega$ Buck$ would fit quite well.
