Pardon me if this is a silly question, but what is going on with China vs. Vegas and the lack of tourism?

I'm doing this from memory. If you do some googling, you'll find more.

There were a few big corruption scandals in China. It was a big embarrassment to the Chinese government. It turns out one of the things the crooks did with the their money was take big gambling trips. So, whatever else they did about the corruption directly, they cracked down on allowing their citizens from traveling to gambling destinations. Vegas being one, but Macau was the big one. Since a number of the big casinos in Macau are owned by LV companies (Wynn, LV Sands, and less so MGM), this has hit those companies twice. It hit their Macau business hard, and it also dinged the normal Chinese whale migration to Vegas.

It is a decline of Chinese tourism that is being referenced. Baccarat revenue was down 70% in Q1 of this year.

Bob and Sally from Omaha are still coming here in droves, but the whale traffic is down.

Are they going to sell it?

My friends at Mirage don't know anything about it!

It's merely unsubstantiated rumor.

Too bad Bob and Sally don't have the gambling budget of many Asian gamblers. It's great to have record tourism but if they are not spending as much money it doesn't help the overall picture. The truth is the large casinos have more interest in Asians than they do in US gamblers. Baccarat revenue is down, that is not a good sign. Macau revenue is way down, that is a huge problem with the casino companies that have heavily invested in Macau. Caesars, MGM these are corporations that have a worldwide presence having a huge loss in one area, like Macau, is a huge problem for the corporation.

So yes Macau has a huge impact on Las Vegas. So yes the lack of Asian gamblers has a huge impact in Las Vegas.

Unless you have friends at MGM Corporate they wont know anything about it until MGM Corporate decides to make it public. Once you tell one employee on the front line you better have your ducks in a row.
