My family and I are considering a move to Las Vegas next year. After comparing, it appears the cost of living in less than where we currently live in Lancaster, Ca. Nevada is still close enough to CA to come visit the grand baby and any of my adult children who may remain here. We have a 4 1/2 year old son who has autism. My husband is in need of a kidney transplant and is currently on dialysis. I am just wondering what the services are like for children with special needs and what the medical care is like in general. We currently have to travel almost 80 miles to see the kidney transplant team and my son's orthopedic specialist because those services simply are not available in our town. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do a lot of research and make sure it would be better for you. Nevada is not known for it's social services or easy availability of health care. Unless, of course, you have a LOT of money. If you do, there is nothing you can't get here.

One large renal hemodialysis place is DaVita Las Vegas Renal Center.

I recall that there are a couple threads on here about autistic special needs children. I found a few of them you might like to read through.

The school system here is poor. The autism support in public schools here is also very poor. Last year many of the special education classes had general education teachers with no special education training. Las Vegas is really not a place to move to with children.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It sounds rather dismal so I will have to continue to do some research. The previous threads that were posted were helpful. FYI when say we are considering a move to Vegas I am including Henderson, Summerlin, Parhump, Winchester and possibly toward Mt. Charleston.

I am curious about why medical care would be so poor there? I mean my current area has zero pediatric specialists but we have good doctors and a decent hospital if you are willing to advocate for your loved one. The NICU in our rinky dink hospital saved my son and is top notch! I can't imagine medical care being worse than here though, that just boggles my mind.

It's not that the doctors are bad. It's that statistically per the population there aren't enough doctors and medical services. We should be in the thousands of doctors per so many people in the population when we're in the hundreds. Also certain procedures aren't available here due to the lack of specialists.

The Governor is actively working on improving this currently. They have two new medical schools in the works to be opening up in Las Vegas in 2017 in order to bring in more doctors, and those facilities are in the process of raising funding to build a 100 million dollar research hospital that will bring in more specialists for procedures and training programs.

Also the other issue with health care here, from what I understand, is that there is one health insurance company that has effectively cornered the market and has a monopoly. That causes problems for the medical reimbursements for physicians. Which in turn discourages keeping physicians here when they can't make money practicing medicine.

Sierra is the reason that healthcare is so bad. They now are a part of United Healthcare. It's a monopoly, and it's driven reimbursement rates into the ground. Medicare is our best payer in the valley. United typically allows 80% of Medicare's allowable after your copayment. That means you pay twenty dollars and they pay eight. Capiche?

Looks like I have more research to do or may need to cross Las Vegas off our short list. My husband is on Medicare/Medi-Cal and is currently getting everything he needs. We should be getting on the transplant list soon, just waiting on an appointment for evaluation. Depending on his test results (they give a number to determine appx percent of risk of rejection), it will determine where we may end up anyway. For kidney transplants there is no national listing, it is all regional and you can be listed in multiple regions. So if we remain in So Cal we could list in the regions that are within a 3-4 hour plane ride. I am just looking to get out of the state because the cost of living is so high and we are on a fixed income. If I could get him healthy again, one of us could go back to work and one of us could stay home with our son. Probably more info than you needed to know but I wanted to let you know I appreciate the honesty. I would be heartbroken to make a move and it hurt my son or my husband.

Good luck with your evaluation. My hubby just went thru that last week...it's a VERY long day, let me tell you! No letter yet, but the nurse coordinator feels he'll get on the list. Good luck to you!!!

Thanks! I will let you know how it goes. We did this a year ago and they felt he would physically be a good candidate but our finances were a mess. We were temporarily homeless. They felt it wasn't the right time to add him. We have been in our new place for 6 months so I am hoping he can get on the list.
